Our master’s course student Changle Liao won an Excellent Poster Award in International Workshop on Soft Matter and Biophysics Theories (SMBT) 2026 , held in Beijing last week. He presented this study: arxiv.org/abs/2608.05756 Congratulations!! 👏
New preprint! arxiv.org/abs/2608.05756 Using quasi-2D Chlamydomonas suspensions, we find two simple hydrodynamic modes for angular correlations of nearby cells. Reproduced numerically by Stokeslet-like swimmers. Congrats Changle (exp't) & Hayano-san (numerics, Furukawa Group)!
New preprint! arxiv.org/abs/2604.13575 This is a perspective article by Takeuchi and Nishiguchi, about various phases of active matter in bacterial populations. We briefly overview active gas, liquid, glass and nematic states seen in bacteria and give a few future perspectives.
We believe our method is useful not only for proposing a new equation in theoretical physics, but also for data-driven approaches as a preprocessing step to narrow down candidate terms. Achievement due to a brilliant idea and impressive theoretical creativity of Junya. Congrats!
New preprint! arxiv.org/abs/2604.01592 When writing down a governing equation as PDE, one needs to select terms satisfying given symmetries. This task, often done manually, is now formulated as a linear algebra problem, allowing us to generate a list of terms algorithmically!
With the start of a new academic year, a new postdoc Vaibhav R. S. Parmar, and new students Yuhao Cao & Shusuke Takae joined us! Also a new intern Xuan Tu joined last month. Welcome! lab.kaztake.org/members.html
We also showed that, through device design, we can change the distribution of produced colanic acid! This is a great achievement by our former postdoc Fumi Yokoyama @Bunshu23. He carried it out in the lab as his main project, which he designed himself. Congratulations!!
New preprint! doi.org/10.64898/2026.… Bacterial colonies are known to develop nematic order. We found that topological defects therein can even induce a genetic expression! It produces an important component of biofilm extracellular matrix, colanic acid.
New KAKENHI project, "Dynamical Materials Science," involving nearly 30 PIs in Japan, will start soon! Takeuchi is the director and leads one of the scientific projects. dms.phys.s.u-tokyo.ac.jp. You can also follow English updates on Bluesky: bsky.app/profile/dyn-ma…
New preprint! arxiv.org/abs/2602.04357 1D KPZ class has been studied extensively by exact solutions, but many of them were about typical fluctuations. Here we studied KPZ large deviations numerically, by a method called population dynamics algorithm. Congrats Yuta!
New preprint! arxiv.org/abs/2601.08243 We realized topological transport in bacterial active matter, via microfabricated geometric structures. Besides edge localization and transport of bacteria, we also captured its topological origin thru modeling. Congrats Yoshi!
There are people who go, but also people who come. Today a new student, Changle Liao, joined us and reboots the project he initiated during his internship. Also, a new intern from France, Félix, joined us 2 weeks ago. 2 new students from April also visited us. A lot of new wind!
Our former postdoc, Yokoyama-san, has just joined OIST in Okinawa, Japan and started his independent group. Congrats again! We are proud of you, and the creativities of the members you appreciated in the post!
Flying to Okinawa. A huge thx u to my colleagues & their families/partners. I’ve learned so much in physics & also reflected deeply on biology. Considering my goal as a postdoc, my interdisciplinary journey has helped me shape my own science. I’ll be back & have a party together!
Our postdoc Fumi Yokoyama won an independent position in OIST, Okinawa, Japan! Congratulations!! 🎊
I’m stoked to announce my next position, Buribushi Fellow (research-focused position), to start my own group as a PI at OIST in Okinawa, Japan from October. oist.jp/research/burib…
Today a new postdoc, Aiswarya, joined us as a postdoc from 🇮🇳. Welcome!! lab.kaztake.org/members.html
A new academic year has started in Japan, with two newcomers in the lab: Dr. Go Takayama (postdoc) and Mr. Shogo Ito (Master’s course student). Welcome!
& press released! eurekalert.org/news-releases/…
published in PNAS! doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2… & press release to come. Stay tuned!
The 2nd preprint of today: arxiv.org/abs/2407.05269 By large-scale experiments, numerics & analytic theory, we clarified how collective motion of dense bacterial suspensions transitions from a stable vortex under strong confinement to active turbulence as confinement is weakened.
Published in Soft Matter! doi.org/10.1039/D4SM01… Fumi Yokoyama @Bunshu23 became a coauthor due to his significant contributions to the additional experiments.
2 new preprints! The 1st one arxiv.org/abs/2407.05031 is about the finding that starving bacteria form bundles akin to smectic liquid crystal. We quantified the smectic order by ML-based image analysis and discussed the relevance of extracellular substances & growth arrest.
Published in PRL! journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/1…
Preprint major update! arxiv.org/abs/2406.07150 With Kazuaki Takasan who joined as a coauthor, we added simulations of the quantum Heisenberg model and confirmed the partial emergence of KPZ in integrable isotropic spin chains, in such a quantum model too!
