On Ukrainian area (between the Southern Bug and the Dnipro), around 4100–3500 BCE, the Cucuteni–Trypillia culture built huge planned settlements. They were concentric “proto-cities” with rings of houses and a large inner space — larger than most contemporary Mesopotamian sites.
In 1253 knyaz Danylo Romanovych was crowned by the papal legate Opizo. He received the title King of Rus. Pope Innocent IV recognized the coronation. After the Mongol sack of Kyiv in 1240, the Galicia-Volhynia principality was the largest remaining Rus’ realm in the west.

The Bolsheviks could only "capture" Ukraine by creating a fake republic in Kharkiv. Without this lie, they would have been expelled in months.
The Bolsheviks completely lost the 1917 elections in Ukraine, gaining a measly 10%. Nobody wanted them here.
The motto "Freedom to Ukraine or Death" terrified communists so much that they banned even mentioning Kholodny Yar for decades.
The occupiers had to pull entire divisions into Kholodny Yar to defeat a few thousand Ukrainians. We fought with quality; they only with mass.
Even in captivity at Lukyanivska prison (1923), Kholodny Yar fighters started an uprising. They fought to the last bullet, never bowing to Moscow.

Kholodny Yar insurgents (Ukrainians) used "invisible squad" tactics. They appeared out of nowhere, crushed Red units, and vanished. It was the first modern guerrilla warfare.
