Factory trials of a SU-76M SPG with a 57 mm ZIS-2 gun instead of the 76 mm ZIS-3 began #OTD in 1944. The vehicle passed trials and a decree to put it into production was drafted, but never signed, as more powerful guns were already required. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

The Heavy Tank T1E1 prototype was finished #OTD in 1942. This vehicle was built to test the viability of an electric transmission, so it had no armament. The trials were very successful, but soon after the Americans decided against building heavy tanks. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

The French recaptured a fair number of their own tanks from the Germans in 1944-45 and used them in battle. The SOMUA S 35 last went into battle #OTD in 1945 at Île d'Oléron where four tanks were used in an amphibious landing. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

Krupp was contracted to build the turret platform and turret of a new German tank, but weaseled into building two whole tanks. The B.W.I (Kp) was finished #OTD in 1936. The tank evolved into the Pz.IV, which ended up as Germany's most numerous medium tank. #tanks #history

#OTD in 1935 the Renault ZM was accepted into service as the Char léger Modèle 1935 R. This tank repeated the concept of a two-man light infantry tank introduced by the Renault FT almost two decades prior and even had the same SA 18 37 mm gun. #tanks #history

In development since 1943, the IS-4 was accepted into service #OTD in 1946. It was a good 15 tons heavier than the IS-3 tank it replaced, but turned out to be less reliable and didn't offer a meaningful upgrade in firepower or protection. #tanks #history #ColdWar
