I love Gideon’s response to God‘s call. “If the Lord is with us where are all the miracles?” Jud6:13. He was no cessationist regarding miracles as belonging simply to Joshua‘s generation. He was a frustrated Bible believer who longed to experience the living God.

Not very flattering to learn that God has chosen the foolish, the weak, the base, the despised & the things that are not. 1Co1:27. Not flattering but so comforting when you’re feeling low & in a world struggling against depression & longing for self worth. God loves & chose me!

So wonderful to know we’re Christians not because we were clever enough to work out God but because he took the initiative & called us, not because we were impressive in any way but because he wanted us! 1Cor1:26-27. As Jesus said, “You didn’t choose me but I chose you”Jn15:16.

Smart people don’t have the edge on knowing God. Believers aren’t to be applauded for their superior intellect in working him out. Human wisdom never entrusted itself to a crucified Messiah. But when God calls you & opens your eyes you’re staggered at his beauty & worship him.

Don’t be surprised that as a Christian you don’t necessarily have the respect of your contemporaries. Your leader, the one you worship & follow, was mocked, spat upon, stripped naked & publicly crucified. It takes a miracle of revelation to see him as your hero & follow him.

The gospel isn’t meant to impress intellectuals. It doesn’t applaud human wisdom. It insists that we’ll never find God through our insight or logic. Salvation through Christ’s cross tells us we’re not only bankrupt but also offensive to a holy God. We need someone to save us!

When Paul came preaching the gospel in Corinth Holy Spirit gifts came with him confirming his testimony (1Cor1:6) & demonstrating the supernatural nature of his message. Now they were waiting the full revelation of this awesome God who had come among them through the gospel. v7.

Thanksgiving should constantly characterise the believer. It’s an acknowledgment that everything we have comes from God’s loving provision. It also opens the way in terms of expectation that God will continue to give & indeed loves to give. He’s a “how much more” kind of Father.

In the Old Testament priests were specifically sanctified, set apart & uniquely privileged to enter the Temple (forbidden to others) where God’s presence was manifest. Now, in Christ, WE TOO are hugely privileged, sanctified, specially set apart & invited to DRAW NEAR. Amazing!

Just finished working through that unique & fascinating little Bible book “Philemon” about the runaway slave, now a wholehearted believer. Paul finishes by saying “I know you will do even more than I say”. It struck me that’s the kind of Christian God wants, an “even more” one.

Remember the distinction between legalism & discipline. They look so similar but are so different. Legalism tries to earn merit & establish your own worth before God & people. Discipline rooted in grace celebrates Christ’s righteousness freely given but takes life seriously.

A superb book about the mighty Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones, a true man of word & Spirit. Every preacher should read & absorb it. It’s a bit dismissive of us Charismatics but we’re used to that.
