🔥 🧪🔥 Californians are learning a harsh truth in the aftermath of the massive Palisades and Eaton fires: some of the biggest toxic threats in a house fire now come from the very “green” technologies we’ve been pushed to adopt—EVs, home battery storage (like Tesla Powerwalls), and even solar panels (which I have). Why? •Lithium-Ion Batteries (in EVs and Powerwalls) can release highly toxic gases like hydrogen fluoride when they burn. They also contain cobalt and nickel, which pose serious health and environmental hazards if released into the air or groundwater. •Solar Panels—especially older or thin-film types—sometimes contain cadmium or lead-based solder, both toxic metals that complicate cleanup efforts when damaged by fire. It’s ironic that these systems, lauded for their environmental benefits, are now major contributors to hazardous debris. According to multiple post-disaster cleanup reports, materials from burned EV batteries and solar panels rank among the most dangerous to remove, requiring specialized crews, equipment, and disposal methods—all of which drive up costs and prolong recovery. VERY high rates of EV/batteries/solar in Palisades & Malibu. Meanwhile, states with more affordable traditional energy face lower adoption rates of these “mandatory” solutions. As a result, their cleanup processes after fires can sometimes be simpler and less costly. Yes, every house fire produces dangerous byproducts—things like asbestos (in older homes), lead paint, and household chemicals—but the addition of lithium-ion batteries and advanced solar tech significantly increases the toxicity risk. The bottom line? Californians trying to do the “right thing” for the environment are now suffering some major unintended consequences. Is it time to rethink how we deploy these technologies—or at least how we manage them after disaster strikes? Perhaps the cleanup effort should scrutinize homes that have these contaminants while being more lenient on others that don’t. Data Points to Consider: •Burning lithium-ion batteries can produce hydrogen fluoride (HF), a corrosive gas harmful to humans and first responders. •Cobalt exposure (released from certain battery fires) is linked to lung and heart problems. •Cadmium (in some solar panels) is a known carcinogen. •Specialized hazmat teams and strict disposal protocols drive up remediation costs significantly. Note that in the LA fires, much of the damage has been gone - the toxins were in the air and are now largely gone and some of what was on the ground has been washed away by the rain. Let’s have a real conversation—how can we keep moving forward with clean energy while protecting communities from these very real dangers?
