"Indigenous societies often excel at non-numerical mathematics, she says." What did I just read. Her one example of indigenous math was spiral smoke signals? How is that of any use in modern life, how does that prepare anyone for the future? Math is supposed to be foundational to all the other sciences, how does knowing how to make spiral smoke signals provide any beneficial knowledge that you could leverage?
@jcochran73 @clairlemon what she's stressing is that we have a limited view of mathematics today, and thus a limited epistemology. the dogma of numerical mathematics has led directly to the numbering of the natural world, which has led to a faulty understanding of it, and thus a misuse of it. 1/2
@schrebersbeams @clairlemon "Dogma of numerical mathematics"? What other kind of math is there other than numerical? Math has been around a long time and is built upon proven and tested rules, using knowledge from many cultures and civilizations.
@jcochran73 @schrebersbeams @clairlemon If you take the course you might learn the answer to this, and learn how you're confusing numerical maths with a wider set of mathematical concepts which by differing degrees have steered different cultures and civilizations.
@TheProphetBob @schrebersbeams @clairlemon No, I think I'll survive just fine without learning the finer points of indigenous smoke signals.
@jcochran73 @TheProphetBob @schrebersbeams @clairlemon "I'm fine being an obstinate incurious dickhead" ok man but can you stop bitching about it online if you aren't going to do anything to fix it
@JustinGurski @jcochran73 @TheProphetBob @schrebersbeams @clairlemon Smoke signals aren't math though. It's people literally blowing smoke. Which is about the same level of gaslighting it requires to call that actual math. Some system of numbers, words, or symbols for them are pretty much required. This isn't ancient aliens on the history channel
@raishiin @JustinGurski @jcochran73 @schrebersbeams @clairlemon So you don't understand smoke signals *or* maths...or language.......
@TheProphetBob @JustinGurski @jcochran73 @schrebersbeams @clairlemon I have an honors degree in mathematics and a BSc in computer science from the university of California, San Diego. It's one of the top 25 schools worldwide and the fifth best public university in the US. I know my math. Do you? Were they using smoke signals as calculators?
@raishiin @TheProphetBob @jcochran73 @schrebersbeams @clairlemon dude bragging about having calc 3 and linear algebra 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@psyduckgyatt @raishiin @jcochran73 @schrebersbeams @clairlemon Hey now that's top 25 calc 3, show some respect 🧐
