Everyone always talks about the books they read over the past year, but Umberto Eco once argued that the more interesting list shows the books you wanted to read but didn’t get to yet. Here are the books I was supposed to read in 2022 but will... tmblr.co/ZtheCwd1B8ixWy…

Just reminded of my take on future fashion in @TheSecretRoot many years ago: “One girl’s shirt was playing a 3-D movie, with monsters jumping out of the shirt and onto the street, where the monster would circle the girl and then jump back onto her clothes…/1

Given all the news about Meta this week, maybe you should pick up a copy of The Secret Root today! While Zuckerberg mostly plundered Neal Stephenson’s metaverse, I also got a chance to explore this idea back in 2012, and found a different dystopia… amazon.com/Secret-Root-Me…

“So where is the next book?” I’m not the only author who gets that question - much better and more famous writers than I am (Patrick Rothfuss, fellow NU alum George R.R. Martin, etc) get asked that question all the time. But I feel guilty... tmblr.co/ZtheCwZk3aGoKy…

Apparently it is possible for the same person to read and appreciate Nawal El Sadawi and Marlon James and Joan Didion and NK Jemisin and Cixin Liu and David Foster Wallace and Salinger and Maxine Hong Kingston and Zadie Smith and Philip Roth.

So apparently @StephenKing ‘s 11/22/63 may be right on the science of time travel, but The Secret Root still has quantum mechanics going for it so I’m not giving up quite yet... npr.org/2020/09/27/917…

Trying to write in the middle of a pandemic, weighed down by surreal pressures of work and family, separated from friends and family for months, all while society is riven by a half dozen different sources of trauma every week...how do you do it? Or do you stop?

Just want to mention, apropos of nothing, that the first 60 pages of The Starless Sea by @erinmorgenstern represents some of the most transcendent writing I’ve seen in a long time, and can’t wait to read the rest.

@foodwishes I think your new recipe for buffalo chicken wing spread on blue cheese crostini may be your best one yet, although I didn’t use the mason jar because we had to eat them immediately

My newest painting, The Sprawl, may have been inspired by @GreatDismal and #daydreamnation on some levels, but the image itself is also the cornfield where Edie emerges in book 1 of @TheSecretRoot as well #artistsoninstagram

This is distressingly accurate. Also, perhaps even more disturbingly, a useful taxonomy for every one of your own characters’ motivations

One downside of writing sequels slowly because you have a job is that the world changes your framing. For example book 3 of The Mesh Chronicles includes a section on Chernobyl - a section I wrote 4 years ago. Now when it is published it will seem like I’m riding #ChernobylHBO 🤷‍♂️
