It is hard not to be impressed by the magnitude of India’s democracy. 44-day election exercise, 900 million eligible voters, 640 million ballots cast (half of them by women), 67% turnout, 1.1 million polling booths, 5.5 million electronic voting machines!
In 1984, Rajeev Gandhi won 414 seats due to sympathy but after that? INC under his leadership won 197 seats in 1989. And then -245 in 1991 -140 in 1996 -141 in 1998 -114 in 1999 -145 in 2004 -206 in 2009 How many times they touched 272 by own after 1984? Never. Modi ji did twice
The truly important take-away from India's 2024 election is that meaningful reform of the Congress Party has been pushed back for a decade or more. What Indian democracy needs most of all is not a BJP majority. What Indian democracy needs is a family-free Congress.
Dear BJP Supporters & Modi Ka Parivar, I understand the disappointment. It is akin to the student who wants 100% but gets 90% and feels sad despite topping the university exams. But remember - in our worst case scenario we - just the BJP- are at 245+ & Congress in its best case…
The Congress, that came to power with 145 seats, is saying the BJP has no right to come to power with 245 seats. Modi may never be as strong a Prime minister as Rajiv Gandhi but he will never be as weak a Prime minister as Manmohan Singh. My views on the 2024 mandate:
