March 5, 1924: The black beret is approved as the official headgear for tank regiments by Britain’s King George V. The color is preferred by crews because oil stains won’t show. The sleek beret has since been adopted by many other nations’ militaries.

Aug. 12, 1923: The 1,000th known asteroid is discovered by astronomer Karl Reinmuth, working from the Heidelberg Observatory in Germany. The speck of rock (seen as a modeled shape) is named Piazzia, in honor of the Italian who in 1801 was the first to identify an asteroid, Ceres.
