End of the chain gang? The NFL tested optical tracking in two stadiums and the Super Bowl last season for line to gain rulings, league officials said today. The technology isn’t expected to be ready for rollout in 2024 and would require a vote. But the future is coming.
The NFL continues to vet other technological advances, including a replay system with high-res cameras along the goal line, sideline and end line; and a Skeletrack System tracking the ball, players and officials. Wearable smart watches with haptics to support officials also have been vetted and could be utilized as soon as 2024.
@TomPelissero Don’t tell Kirk Cousins chains are out.
@TomPelissero This is a no brainer..also chips in the footballs to gauge end zone crosses or not
@TomPelissero no more chain gang guys getting decked on the sideline anymore, what happened to the game I love
@TomPelissero Tom & @RapSheet Chains for line-to-gain 24 years into the 21st century is in Top 5 of the most incredibly asinine methodologies/practices in my lifetime. PLEASE NFL, move into the 21st century. Also, combine optical LTG with microchip in football. @NFL @NFLcommish @MikeGarafolo
@TomPelissero Chain Gang for life, only the real ones know
@TomPelissero Think back to the outcomes of how many games this year alone would have changed if you eliminated “a bad spot” by officiating BEYOND excited for this to roll out even if we have to wait till 2025
