The person who sent you that email knows the second you opened it, how many times you reread it, and roughly where you were sitting. It's a tracking pixel. Most marketing and sales emails have one. Here's how to shut them off:

4/ Check Before You Reply If an email is important and you want to know, you can look. On desktop Gmail: open the email → three dots → "Show original." Search for: "pixel," "open," or "track." If there's a 1x1 image from a tracking service in there, you're being watched.

3/ Do It On The Gmail App Too The app has its own setting and doesn't follow your desktop choice. Go to: Gmail app → Menu → Settings → tap your account → Images. Select: "Ask before displaying external images."

2/ Stop Images Loading (Gmail) Gmail proxies images by default, which hides your IP but still confirms you opened it. Turn them off completely. Go to: Gmail on desktop → gear icon → See all settings → General → Images. Select: "Ask before displaying external images" → Save changes. Now nothing loads unless you tap it.

1/ Stop Images Loading (iPhone) If the image never loads, the pixel never fires. Go to: Settings → Apps → Mail → scroll to Privacy Protection. Turn on: "Protect Mail Activity." That hides your IP and loads images through a proxy, so the sender learns nothing.
