It's hard to believe this is all organic and heartfelt when they carefully apply their makeup, do their hair, frame themselves for the camera, and cry on cue for the iPhone. I'd rather hear someone just calmly talk about how they feel like everyone has to do when the opposing party is in control. Tantrums in adults are unbecoming, and they really turn me off. When my children threw tantrums, I told them I would listen to them, but they had to use their words.

Most importantly, let us remember our primary sources here; the Olympic charter bans religious symbolism of any kind in order to be inclusive and bring people together regardless of their nationality and religion. The ban extends to parody or satire in the sense that the religious symbolism is still there when it’s recognizable. The ban is precisely to prevent this kind of alienation. I’ve seen way too many critiques by people proclaiming that people should stomach it and turn the their cheek — and because they don’t, whereas the poster does, the person posting is more virtuous, more Christ-like, and doing things “right.” This Sunday is a great time to remember that there IS no way for human beings on earth to be perfect, or to do faith right (to the exclusion of others). If you’re calling out others in your certainty because Christ is with you and against them, a great moment to reflect on is the lost sheep. And the converse is true: the Shepherd cares for all his sheep. We’re all trying to figure this out together. The question remains as to what the Olympics review committee will have to say about the violation of the religious and political neutrality clause of the Olympics charter. This applies to ALL religious symbols that cannot be used in association with the Olympics branding in any capacity. Precisely for this kind of reason. It applies to all religions.

Want to tell you loves something. I know some of you were and are waiting for my thoughts on recent events and I have a lot of them which is one reason why I haven’t shared them publicly. I’ve had plenty of conversations in private. In my family group, diverse opinions and complex thoughts are not anathema. Thing is, y’all, so few people read anymore. They read into. They hunt down gotcha phrases to fit their narratives of you. And, let’s be frank, nuance is considerably above X’s IQ. My thoughts about the current event are complicated and not well suited here. I will say this much and leave it here. I believe in justice for all. I do mean all. Even people who make the hair stand up on the back of my neck. If that’s what’s underway here, good. I’m for it. Then make it apply across the board. If it’s not justice, then all they’re doing is making a megalomaniac a bigger cult hero. What I think is that Washington is a mess. An embarrassing mess. A TROUBLING mess. Your basic person spending 30 days in county has more scruples than many of our nation’s leaders. My faith is in Christ alone. Last thing. It’s occurred to me recently that I’m dealing with residual effects of a very intense eight years of embodied stress that has played havoc on me physically. My gracious God has me in a recovering mode with him. I’m protecting some of my peace so I can get well. And it’s working. He’s working. Oh mercy, I love him so. He has been so merciful to me. And I love y’all. This is written specifically to my friends on here because all I’m going to get from my opponents is “BUT …!” And right now I’m just wanting to deal with a few less buts.

Sobered by last night and trying to practice what people call radical acceptance, not of a presidential candidate because surprising things happen. Just plainly sobered by the thought that, with other individuals to choose from, masses of people still hail Trump. He’s what they actually want in a leader. A bully. A verbally abusive, artfully and purposely divisive bully who has all but left the Republican Party unrecognizable. I don’t know. I just can’t understand it. Maybe I’ve got a mental block. But, you who are staunch Republicans, why don’t you care about your own party more than that? Forgive me. I don’t want to be a repeat performance of my 2016 self. I don’t. I didn’t like her anymore than you did. I intend to deal differently with this. I do not intend to get obsessed. I do not intend to lose more relationships. I don’t intend to talk about this regularly. As the Scriptures say, I want to seek peace and pursue it. I want to be a person of kindness, love and compassion. But I’ve got to move to a place of radical acceptance. It was one thing to cast a vote for a party’s only candidate, reasoning the choice as the lesser of two evils. This is quite another thing. This is wide-open-eyed, “we WANT Trump!” Anyway, this is where we are. We can complain all we want about our leaders but, in this government by the people, at the end of the day and the beginning of November, our candidates are mirrors of ourselves.

Maybe a big reason we can’t come together on the right is that too many of the thought leaders, hosts, podcasters and other influencers are just outright egomaniacal narcissists concerned more about self promotion than our beloved country? It makes me sick.

I flipped randomly through my prayer journal as I finished devotions this AM and saw this 2-word prayer. It was 9 days after my big brother suddenly died. The 2nd pic is the journaling page I formatted and use daily. Often it’s covered with words. Other times “Help us” is all I’ve got. God hears. Cry out whatever you’ve got.

Women of the faith, you get to have your own relationship with Jesus and love him with your whole MIND as well as your heart and soul and you dang well can study theology without permission from a man. She says “This is not the land of the free, but the home of the slave…” For reference, Jill Scott’s net worth is estimated to be $12 MILLION and is likely much higher. In what way is she oppressed?

British Prime Minister Margret Thatcher famously once said, “Europe was created by history. America was created by philosophy.” Nearly all European nations trace their beginning to a common ethnic kinship or a cultural characteristic, but America was created by exiles united in voluntary assent to shared political beliefs. That’s why British writer G. K. Chesterton visited the United States for the first time and remarked that America was “a nation with the soul of a church,” not because of its religiosity, but because of a common creed enshrined in “sacred texts” of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution. In 1776, a near-miraculous stew of ideas and leaders came together to form a Declaration of Independence, and 11 years later an equally miraculous gathering formed the Constitution, both centered on a belief in universal human dignity. Government does not grant you the right to free speech, assembly, religion, press, protest, or redress of grievances. We believe that these rights are inalienable and government’s role is simply to protect those rights and ensure human dignity. Government is just a tool, not a source. That’s really a remarkably profound idea we take for granted and fail to celebrate enough. Of course, the sad irony is that the very Founders who argued these ideas so frequently fell short of those same principles. Some owned slaves, and nearly all opposed equal rights for women. So it naturally caused upheaval when nineteenth century Americans increasingly adopted a view held that “All men are created equal,” including black Americans, and a few generations later it came to encompass women as well. Abraham Lincoln believed that the Declaration of Independence did not necessarily proclaim people equal in all respects. Instead, it meant that all people were created with certain equal, inalienable rights—they are ours by right of simply being human—among which are “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” A free society should always strive to achieve these equal rights, even if, as in the case of the Founders, it fell short of that goal in the past. The Declaration’s concept of equality is an aspiration, Lincoln said, “constantly looked to, constantly labored for, and even, though never perfectly attained, constantly approximated, and thereby constantly spreading and deepening its influence and augmenting the happiness and value of life to all people, of all colors, everywhere.” That is the genius of Lincoln’s argument: that the Constitution is concrete (at least until amended), but the Declaration of Independence is aspirational, and the American project is a move toward the aspiration. Despite its roots in American independence, the 4th of July is incomplete without understanding and celebrating Lincoln too. His unique view of the Declaration as an aspirational goal helped properly frame American independence for what it was and what it was bound to be.
