#counselling is political. #psychotherapy is political. #mentalhealth is political. Anyone who doesn't see that, isn't looking hard enough. Hands up if you agree! ❤️ #counselling #psychotherapy #mentalhealth #counsellorstogetheruk #counsellorsconnect #therapistsconnect
@UK_Counsellors I would assume all therapists work very hard to keep politics OUT of the therapy room. That is why the training is so long, to teach and hone the difficult skill of being aware of and being able to bracket your opinions, feelings, politics and biases.
@UK_Counsellors I’m not here for the politics, I’m just a psychotherapist making a different to someone life.
We could say that every aspect of life is political, and certainly the political climate affects us all However this bold statement raises a number of questions To what extent do therapists see their role as political activism, and more importantly, how does this play out in the clinical setting? -Is a white client going to be told they have white privilege? -Is a black client going to have their depression framed as an inevitable result of structural racism? -Are all male clients reminded about toxic masculinity? -What kind of experience of therapy would a gender critical feminist have with an ‘intersectional’ therapist? -What happens when a client holds political views at variance with their therapists? Do clients want to be seen within this framework? Should politically motivated therapists indicate that explicitly in their profile so clients can make an informed choice? @TherapyAntidote @JamesEsses @VeratortieMary @BJ_Sears @sometherapist @BobWithers52 @VincentPsychSA @Jaco_v_Z
@UK_Counsellors We are well aware that it is. But it shouldn't be. Counseling, psychotherapy, and other mental health services SHOULD NOT be avenues for political brainwashing.
@UK_Counsellors Don’t know if I’m a “ usual account “ but as a counsellor wouldn’t you take this to supervision ? I tend not to go with politics and much more with client needs . Doesn’t everyone ?
@UK_Counsellors @Therapists_C The tone of this post appears to be, ‘agree with my statement, or you are wrong’. Not exactly unbiased, eh.
