The approved peacekeeping budget for the period is approximately US$6.8 billion. This represents about 0.5% of global military spending.
“Peacekeeping is a strategic and moral imperative not a humanitarian luxury” President Vazquez of Uruguay
Total number of fatalities in peace operations since 1948: 2,624
United Nations Peacekeepers are instruments of peace.
Currently, more than 100,000 military and civilian personnel serve in 20 UN peace operations worldwide.
Since 1948 there have been a total of 63 UN peacekeeping operations around the world.
The first UN peacekeeping mission was established in 1948
The United States financial contribution constitutes 26% of the UN peacekeeping budget; the largest contributor of all member states.
More than 6,000 international civilian personnel, nearly 15,000 local civilian staff and some 2,200 UN Volunteers from over 160 nations.
Approximately 10,000 people serving in peacekeeping missions are police personnel.
82,000 people serving in peacekeeping missions are troops and military observers.
As of 30 April 2009, 117 countries contributed military and police personnel to UN peacekeeping.
UN Day Concert : A Tribute to Peacekeeping closing with "The Price of Silence" http://bit.ly/8tFEk
The UN does not have its own military force; it depends on contributions from Member States.
The UN is the largest multilateral contributor to post-conflict stabilization worldwide.
Peacekeeping supports a peace process; it is not a substitute for one.
Peacekeeping provides a secure environment that enables peace efforts to proceed; but it's not the only solution to every crisis situation
UN peacekeeping is an impartial and widely accepted vehicle for both burden-sharing and effective action during times of crisis.
Peacekeepers deploy to war-torn regions where no one else is willing or able to go and prevent conflict from returning or escalating.
