The fact that the French revolution managed to survive this absolutely desperate situation in 1793 (amid insane political turmoil) will never cease to amaze me
@Valen10Francois This map is misleading. During the war the French revolutionary armies outnumbered their enemies. So the situtation wasn't desperate at all.
@Valen10Francois I will note that in one of the more (doubly-memory-holed) facts of world history, France, and specifically the Girondins, started the war, which in turn is a very useful reminder that democracies are not immune from the Flucht nach Vorn.
@Valen10Francois Those were weaker, smaller armies. And except for the Prussians, not as professional. France's "levée en masse" smothered those invaders
