Muhammad Ali attempted to lift the 76-year-old former World Bantamweight boxing champion, Johnny Coulon. Coulon was believed to be known for a famous trick in which he used his finger on the lifter's neck and wrist, making himself seemingly unliftable. After retiring from boxing in 1914, Johnny Coulon, a former bantamweight champion, measuring 5 feet and weighing 110 pounds, took to the vaudeville circuit. He showcased his seemingly inexplicable ability to resist being lifted into the air. Coulon's act was straightforward. He would initially allow himself to be lifted by his "opponent," often a heavyweight boxer, wrestler, or weightlifter. The lifter would easily hoist the smaller man into the air, as Coulon would straighten his body into a vertical line and push down on the lifter's wrists, assisting in the lift. Then came Coulon's special counter-grip, where he allegedly lightly grasped the lifter's right wrist (over the pulse-point) with his left hand and placed his right index finger on the left side of the lifter's neck, near the carotid artery. It is speculated that no matter how much the lifter strained and struggled, Coulon remained firmly planted on the floor.
A white Arabian mare named Jenny embarks on a solitary stroll, a routine she had faithfully followed for over 14 years. Jenny went on a long walk every morning, all by herself. She had been taking the same route every morning for 14 years, ever since her owner, 79 years old, became unable to ride. She enjoyed greeting all of the familiar faces along the way, and she stopped and got treats and pettings from some of her favorite humans. The locals treated her like a celebrity and happily cleaned up after her. A piece of paper was attached to her halter that read, "My name is Jenny. I didn't run away, I'm just walking. Thank you." But the police got calls frequently from people who didn’t know about the arrangement. They were very familiar with the horse and the owner, and there had been no incident in 14 years. A local veterinarian used to give her routine checkups and continued to find her to be healthy and showing no anxiety about her unique lifestyle.
In an unusual case documented by a University of Zimbabwe professor in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1988, a teenage girl, who anatomically lacked a vagina, became pregnant. The conception occurred after the girl engaged in oral sex, followed by a stab wound to her abdomen. It is believed that the sperm accessed her reproductive organs via her gastrointestinal tract, facilitated by the abdominal wound. Despite the significant anatomical challenges, the baby was delivered healthy via a caesarean section.
A blonde teenager, wanting to earn some extra money for the summer, decided to hire herself out as a "handy-woman" She started canvassing a nearby well-to-do neighborhood. She went to the front door of the first house, and asked the owner if he had any odd jobs for her to do. "Well, I guess I could use somebody to paint my porch," he said, "How much will you charge me?" Delighted, the girl quickly responded, "How about $50?" The man agreed and told her that the paint brushes and everything she would need was in the garage. The man's wife, hearing the conversation said to her husband, "Does she realize that our porch goes ALL the way around the house?" He responded, "That's a bit cynical, isn't it?" The wife replied, "You're right. I guess I'm starting to believe all those dumb blonde jokes we've been getting by email lately." Later that day, the blonde teenager came to the door to collect her money. "You're finished already?" the startled husband asked. "Yes, she replied, and I even had paint left over, so I gave it two coats." Impressed, the man reached into his pocket for the $50.00 and handed it to her along with a $10.00 tip. “And, by the way," the teenager added, "it's not a Porch, it's a Lexus."

The Man Who Went Shopping For Dining Chairs and Accidentally Bought Stonehenge. On September 21, 1915, a British barrister named Cecil Chubb was given a very simple task by his wife, Mary. She sent him to a local auction in Salisbury with strict instructions: buy a nice set of dining chairs for their home. But as Chubb sat in the auction house, he got distracted. "Lot 15" came up for sale, a 30-acre plot of land featuring a crumbling, dilapidated ring of ancient rocks. The bidding was incredibly sluggish, and on a complete whim, Chubb raised his hand. When the gavel fell, he had just purchased Stonehenge for £6,600 (roughly $800,000 today). He proudly presented the 5,000-year-old megalithic wonder to his wife as a surprise "birthday present." Mary was absolutely furious. She didn't want a pile of ancient rocks; she wanted her dining chairs. Three years later, tired of his wife’s complaints and realizing the immense historical weight of his impulse purchase, Chubb donated the entire monument to the British government. He attached one strict condition: the public must always have access to it. Today, it stands protected forever, all because a husband couldn't stick to a shopping list.
The Man Who Became His Own Mother. When his 78-year-old mother Concetta passed away in 2015 in the Sicilian town of Gela, Giuseppe Vetrano faced a difficult situation. Instead of reporting her death and losing her monthly pension, he came up with a plan that sounds like it came straight out of a movie. He started dressing as her. He would put on her clothes, wear a wig that matched her hairstyle, apply makeup, glasses, and even walk with the same slow shuffle. For nearly two years, “Concetta” kept showing up at the local post office to collect the money. Neighbors saw the familiar elderly woman and never thought twice about it. The disguise was so good that it only ended in 2018 when postal workers became suspicious and called the police. Giuseppe was arrested while still in full costume. When the authorities released the side-by-side photos, the real Concetta next to Giuseppe dressed exactly as her, the images went viral across Italy. When the authorities released the side-by-side photos, the real Concetta next to Giuseppe dressed exactly as herthe images went viral across Italy. It’s one of the strangest fraud stories you’ll ever hear: a grown man who spent years living as his deceased mother just to keep the pension checks coming.
The Only Dog Ever Officially Enlisted in the Royal Navy. In 1939, a Great Dane named Nuisance had a problem. He loved riding the trains between Simon's Town and Cape Town, South Africa, escorting drunk sailors back to base. The state railway company didn't love him back, they threatened to have him put down unless someone paid his fares. The Royal Navy's solution was breathtaking in its bureaucratic elegance: they enlisted him. On August 25, 1939, Able Seaman Just Nuisance, surname Nuisance, first name Just, trade listed as "Bonecrusher," religion as "Scrounger", became the only dog in history officially enrolled in the Royal Navy. As enlisted personnel, he was entitled to free rail travel. Problem solved. His service record reads like a sitcom. He was charged with sleeping in the Petty Officers' dormitory and sentenced to "deprivation of bones for seven days." He went AWOL repeatedly, refused to leave pubs at closing time, lost his collar, and, in his most serious infractions, killed the mascots of two Royal Navy warships, HMS Shropshire and HMS Redoubt. He never once went to sea. He died on April 1, 1944, his seventh birthday, after being put to sleep due to a paralytic condition called thrombosis. The Royal Navy buried him with full military honours, a firing party, a bugler sounding the Last Post, and a Union Jack draped over his grave on the slopes above Simon's Town. His bronze statue still watches over the harbour today. They gave a dog a rank, a salary, and a disciplinary record just to get him a free train ticket. Peak military logic.
Granddaughter Shares a Poignant Moment That Ends Her Grandparents' 60-Year Love Story Emily Hime realized that her idea of a romantic love story was flawed. She thought it was Romeo and Juliet but realized it was simply when people faced life and grew old together—like her grandparents. Hime's grandmother was diagnosed with cancer, and her condition quickly deteriorated. She watched as her grandfather stepped up to the plate and took on the laundry, cooking, and other tasks to help his wife in every way possible. He was there for her in her lowest moments and held her hand through it all. His devotion was never-ending, nor was his love and admiration for his beloved companion of almost sixty years. "It’s him being by her side every single day while she was hospitalized and every day while she remained in hospice. It’s him rubbing her face, kissing her forehead, and holding her hand every moment he can." The woman's grandfather showered his wife with compliments and told her she was beautiful even after her strokes and multiple rounds of chemotherapy. She was frail and did not look like her old self, but he thought she was more beautiful than ever. Hime was moved to tears as she witnessed the final chapter of their love story. She took a photo of their last precious moment and shared it online to encourage others.
The Luckiest Fool in American History. In 1700s New England, a barely literate leather tanner named Timothy Dexter married a wealthy widow and decided he was a business genius. His wealthy rivals, eager to watch him fail, fed him deliberately terrible investment advice. They told him to ship warming pans to the tropical West Indies, where no one could possibly need them. Dexter did it without hesitation. He sold every single one. Plantation owners bought them as ladles for their molasses vats. Then his rivals told him to ship coal to Newcastle, England, a city literally famous for its coal mines. Dexter loaded a ship and sailed. He arrived to find the miners on strike and sold his entire cargo at a massive profit. He crowned himself “Lord” Timothy Dexter, filled his Newburyport estate with 40 life-sized wooden statues of famous figures, Washington, Jefferson, Napoleon, and one of himself, inscribed: “I am the first in the East, the first in the West, and the greatest philosopher in the Western World.” He wrote a book so devoid of punctuation that the second edition included an extra page of periods and commas for readers to “salt and pepper as they please.” His final act of absurdity was staging his own funeral while still alive. Three thousand people attended. A eulogy was delivered, a coffin was buried in the garden, and wine flowed freely. Then mourners heard screaming from the kitchen, Dexter had emerged from hiding and was beating his wife with a cane because she hadn’t cried hard enough during the service. He died for real in 1806 at age 59. Every scheme his enemies designed to ruin him only made him richer. History’s greatest argument that the universe has a sense of humor. Sometimes the best business strategy is being too clueless to know you should fail.
Just two days after my mom passed away, something unexpected happened. I ran into Mark at Walmart. I hadn't seen him in quite a while. He was using one of the store's mobility scooters, so I stopped to talk to him and asked how he was doing. He told me that his own mobility chair had stopped working because the batteries had died. Without it, getting around had become much harder for him. I told Mark about my mom. A few months before she passed away, I had bought her a mobility chair. It was still in excellent condition, and the batteries were brand new. I knew my mom wouldn't want it sitting unused. She would have wanted it to help someone who truly needed it. So I offered the chair to Mark. Today, Tess and I delivered it to him. The smile on his face when he saw it was something I'll never forget. It was a small thing, but it meant a lot. I hope the chair makes his everyday life a little easier and gives him back some of the independence he had lost. Losing my mom has been incredibly difficult. But being able to help someone with something that once belonged to her made this moment feel special. I like to think Mom would have smiled too.
Ronald Lee Ermey enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1961 at age 17. He went through recruit training at MCRD San Diego and initially served in the aviation support field. In 1965, he became a Marine Corps Drill Instructor with India Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, MCRD San Diego, serving on the drill field for about two years. That experience would eventually make him famous decades later. He subsequently served with Marine Wing Support Group 17 on Okinawa and deployed to Vietnam in 1968, spending approximately 14 months in-country. He later returned to Okinawa and advanced to Staff Sergeant, E-6. Unfortunately, injuries he suffered during his service eventually forced him out of the Corps. He was medically retired in 1971/1972 as a Staff Sergeant. Marine Corps sources generally describe the retirement as occurring in 1972, while Ermey's own biography lists 1971. May 17, 2002, Ermey had become famous worldwide for playing Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket. But the Marine Corps recognized that his relationship with the Corps went far beyond acting. On May 17, 2002, Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James L. Jones presented Ermey with an honorary promotion to Gunnery Sergeant (E-7). It was extraordinary because Ermey became the first Marine retiree in the history of the Corps to receive such a promotion. The Marine Corps' own article described him as having been “recently honorably promoted to gunnery sergeant” and noted that he continued dedicating himself to the Corps even after medical retirement. And Ermey himself had a great attitude about it. He reportedly didn't consider himself finished with the Marine Corps. He joked that he didn't put “RET” after his name, instead calling himself: “Gunnery Sgt. R. Lee Ermey (Very Active).” One thing I think Marines will appreciate He earned the respect of the Corps before Hollywood ever made him famous. He had been a Marine, a Vietnam veteran, a Drill Instructor, and a Staff Sergeant before he ever put on the campaign cover and played Hartman. April 15, 2018 — the day the Marine Corps lost one of its most recognizable voices. “Gunny” Ermey died from complications of pneumonia at the age of 74.
In Fall 1994, Tony Cicoria, a 42-year-old orthopedic surgeon and former college football player, stepped away from a family gathering at a lakeside pavilion in upstate New York to call his mother from a payphone. There was light rain and thunder somewhere in the distance. His mother hung up. He was still standing a foot from the receiver when lightning came out of the phone and hit him in the face. Cicoria says he remembers what happened next in detail: flying backward, then flying forward, then looking down and seeing his own body on the ground. "I said to myself, 'Oh s***, I'm d*ad.'" He watched people converge on it, and watched a woman, who had been waiting in line behind him for the phone, position herself over his chest and begin CPR. He came to with burns on his face and foot. Scans found no lasting brain damage, and within weeks he was back operating. Then, several weeks after that, came something else. Cicoria, who had never cared for classical music and hadn't touched a piano since a year of hated lessons at age 7, was overtaken by a craving to hear piano music. He drove long distances to buy Chopin recordings. He bought an upright piano and taught himself from beginner books, waking at 4 a.m. to practice before surgery. Music began arriving in his dreams. The obsession never lifted. It cost him his marriage. It also made him a composer, he debuted his first original piece in 2007, and the subject of the opening chapter of neurologist Oliver Sacks's book "Musicophilia."
