What was so special about this ship and what was it doing in East African waters engaging in battle with its guns ending up as mementos in some East African countries e.g. Kenya & Uganda? #WW1

According to the account during the Great War Mukhenye fought some battles around #Lindi #Tanzania; he describes how they levelled an area called "Kambi ya Ndege" with mortars before attacking the Germans #WW1
To Mukheli even the number of people who died during the battles they fought were too many comparing the carnage of these #WW1 battles with the tribal wars he had been used to earlier in Western Kenya between different tribes.

Odandayo Mukhenye Agweli, a Kenyan askari with 4 KAR stated he did not understand why they fought the Germans and even what the war was all about. "....though we admired the European ways of fighting, we were still left wondering why so many people had to die?!" #WW1

The account of an askari who fought with the British imperial Kings African Rifles (precursor to todays KDF) sheds some light on the consternation that many African askari & carriers faced as they tried to fathom what the ''wazungus'' were fighting over. #WW1

Nyete spent 2 months in #Kariakor after recruitment doing other tasks together with other men of the Carrier corps before finally being sent off to carry provisions for the British forces made up mostly during the war of either Indian or South African soldiers. #WW1
Nyete further went on to describe how after being recruited they trekked from their village to #Kariakor area in #Nairobi taking 4 days to reach the city walking all the way. (Kariakor is said to be a corruption of the word carrier corps and is identified with the corps) #WW1
Nyete described how they were around 100 in number who were recruited by Ngovi with the preferred men being the unmarried ones as married men were considered a liability as they would always be thinking about their wives. #WW1

''Ntheketha Nyete'' a Kenyan who served as a carrier in the war described how they were recruited from their village by a British man with another Kenyan called Ngovi in charge of the same. #WW1

Anne Samson a historian from South Africa @thesamsonsEd has researched & provided some accounts of the experiences of Africans during this white mans war of 1914 to 1918 - the 1st World War #WW1 fought in what is today Kenya, Tanzania, Lake Victoria and even reaching up to Rwanda
However records for the same especially on the German side (for Tanzanians & others who fought & carried for them) are very scarce; even on the British side not a lot has been recorded about the African askari & carriers who served for Britian in the East African theatre of #WW1

These REO trucks must have been very sturdy for the bush but after the war they disappeared from East Africa? Anybody know if any REO truck antiques left in the region? #WW1

In his practice, he had an assistant, one C. Lobo. Of the three afore-mentioned doctors, Dr. Ribeiro (pictured) was the most eccentric. A tamed zebra, by which bizarre means he visited the sick around Nairobi, made him famous all over.

@WW1EACampaign Fascinating. These cage-type baskets look like rat catchers. There were outbreaks of plague at times during the war in towns/market areas. Medical assistants not likely to be commandeered unlike stretcher-bearers. There was a requirement assistants were literate .

L/Cpl Alhaji Grunshi, serving in the Gold Coast Regiment, was the first soldier in British service to fire a shot in the First World War in 1914. He fought on until the end of the war. He was promoted to sergeant, and received the Military Medal in 1919 for his exploits.
