@Sylvette3D Know employment laws in your country and state. Stand up for yourself when companies are knowingly breaking those laws. Make your employer commit to things on paper, not verbally. Don't let yourself get taken advantage of.

@Sylvette3D I wish I knew how to network and build connections. It's still a struggle. The advice I would give is that ideas are perfect. Games are imperfect. What you put to paper may not live up to what's in your head; accepting this is a key part of the development process
@Sylvette3D That no matter how inclusive so much of it may seem, the Class Divide is very much Well and Good. If you come from a financially worse-off background you will not find many people who understand your struggles. It will feel alienating trying to fit into any Dev group.
@Sylvette3D Always be wary of people who push or break your boundaries while playing the office politics siloing game. Chances are, you aren't alone in your suffering because those types leave behind a lot of damage in their wake for you to clean up.
@Sylvette3D Learn to leave. No one is going to advocate for you or mentor you or even be real friends with you in toxic work environments. Any cameraderie is based on licking old wounds and that isn't healthy. Find communities that freely share knowledge and maintain a teamwork mindset.
@Sylvette3D People will assume you are not technical / a coder. If you are, you may feel compelled to be 10x better than your colleagues, to prove those people wrong. The real victory is knowing you have NOTHING to prove. You have the right to fail, and it does not invalidate your skills.
@Sylvette3D Just because someone in games you admire is great at their job does not make them a great leader, mentor, or friend. Be the change you want to see.

@Sylvette3D Read the contract closely/ ask to make changes you want to the contract/ take the time to know what you need in an agreement. You cannot please everyone. Make sure you are pleasing yourself with your career growth and changes. Seriously, take the time to celebrate wins. ❤️
@Sylvette3D @AFNarratives8 I’d say pick your battles. There’s gonna be a lot of important things in dev to fight and work for, but if you fight for all of them you’ll burn out so, so fast. Also learning processes is more important than learning programs! Programs change but techniques are forever!
@Sylvette3D There is a huge group of people out there, probably even in your classes and seminars if you're a student, who think women aren't capable of programming because we're women. That we're useful when things need to be pretty or to assist them with small tasks. Don't listen to them.
@Sylvette3D Oh & one of the more important ones regardless of gender: If the folks in charge of managing the $$$ (accounting, payroll, COO, etc) quit/leave, start updating your resume. If legal also quits, don't do "favors", keep your tasks to your role, & have a employement lawyer # handy.
@Sylvette3D 3) It's not your responsibility to fix the DEI issues on your team/company just because you are a woman, POC, LGBTQ, etc if it is not something you're interested in doing. Tokenization sets you up for failure on something you weren't hired for. Do your job, support your peers.
@Sylvette3D 2) Not all women in leadership are your allies. Some are subject to the same biases & "pick me" attitudes reinforced by being in toxic leadership practices. They also benefit from it. If you are looking for women leaders, believe their actions, not their words.
@Sylvette3D So many I can add to this thread, but the 3 hardest leassons apart from the obvious: 1) People will question/use your passion/reasons for being in this industry against you. But at the end of the day this is a business & you are but a dollar amount. Use your damn PTO.
2/ I will be sharing this in our PRGDA and Puertorras in Game Dev community discord, and pass it on to students so they can check ya'll out and see how many great women/femme role models in games they get to have! So I truly appreciate every one of you sharing and commenting 🫶
