too many powerful Black people are more concerned about changing the narrative around Black people than they are about changing the material conditions for Black people.
Brittany Watts, the Ohio woman charged with a felony crime after suffering a miscarriage at 21 weeks, speaks out for the first time to tell her story and educate the public so her tragedy doesn’t repeat itself with anyone else.
While we often have discussions about maternal mental health from the perspective of women and birthing individuals, it's equally important to include men's perspectives, especially Black men, in these conversations. Black men can play a crucial role in supporting their partners
84% of pregnancy related deaths are preventable 88% of births are attended by MDs 98% of births occur in a hospital Risk for preventable, predictable, unfair death = birthing w/MDs in a hospital Many OB & Peds MDs may not know these data. I’m making sure the public knows.

🚨🧵: The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act goes into effect today, providing expansive protections to workers seeking accommodation for *any* pregnancy-related medical condition. It's the result of 10+ years of advocacy. Here's everything you need to know: 19thnews.org/2023/06/pregna…
On International Day of the Midwife, we uplift midwifery, an evidence-based solution to reducing maternal mortality. We thank the advocates and family members fighting everyday for #BirthEquityNYC. 💜 Midwifery resources for birthing people: nyc.gov/site/doh/healt… #MidwivesDay
Postpartum psychosis occurs in approximately 1-2 out of every 1,000 deliveries, with symptoms occurring as early as the first 48 to 72 hours postpartum. However, most episodes develop within the first 2 weeks. #MaternalMentalHealthWeek
"The effects of environmental stress on Black women are severe. One study found that by the time a Black woman reaches her 50s, the toll of stress on her body has resulted in an additional seven years of biological aging." We have got to change this.
as you become more you, you’ll become less you in the eyes of certain people, but it’s not your responsibility to keep up with versions of you that they want to see.
One of the most loving things you can do for yourself is to give yourself permission to not always have your shit together. This life will constantly oscillate between seasons of order and disorder. The question is: can you still love yourself when your mess is showing?
There are no words to describe this tremendous loss to our UVA Football family. Lavel, Devin, D’Sean - you will all be dearly missed and we will never forget the impact you had on our team and community.
Learning to navigate and alchemize fear is essential to your soul’s journey.
Is the community “vulnerable” or targeted? “Poor” or chronically disenfranchised? “Low-income” or are its residents disproportionately impacted by discriminatory hiring practices that impact upward mobility? “At risk” or put in a precarious position due to structural violence?
Toni Cade Bambara’s question, “what are we pretending not to know today?” is so important because it urges us to look at what we don’t want to see; she moves us toward reckoning with the fantasies & delusion that are more comfortable & appealing than truth. Whew.
Kwame Ture on being a revolution ary "When you see people call themselves revolutionary always talking about destroying, destroying, destroying but never talking about building or creating, they’re not revolutionary. They do not understand the first thing about revolution."
Herbalist, healers, doulas, birth workers, medicine keepers. Thank you for your service past, present, future, for studying your craft, honoring these traditions and lineages and remembering these ways. We didn’t know exactly what was coming but we answered the call and got ready

sudan, south sudan, ethiopia and the drc have been subject to the largest commercial land transfers on the continent. you want to understand settler colonialism? the wars in each of these places? start there.
We should all take pause in this moment. Politicians use past social movements as photo ops while decrying current social movements. Our forbearers of the movement have warned us about this.
There is no order in genocide. This administration is out of order.

Do I think a bunch a southern white frat boys are concerned about Israel? Nope. But I do think they will look for any excuse to be publicly bigoted towards Muslims and Black folk as the (insert SEC school) does this 🤷🏾♂️.
Scientists have found what they call 'the master regulator' of the immune system in the human brain. If it holds up it's a stunning discovery that could transform treatments for autoimmune disease and post-viral illnesses. What did they find, and how?🧵
“The problem is, some of y’all are trying to sit at tables God sent you to flip”. -Camille Walker
A lot of people keep referencing Rosa Parks, so can we please tell the Rosa Parks bus story properly? It’s actually more telling that way. She DID NOT try to sit in the front of the bus. What actually happened might be more telling for how power is used and wielded. /1
I wrote about the crackdown on campus protests. Universities like Columbia, Cornell and Emory trade on Vietnam Era protests to market themselves to student activists. Protest is part of their brand and sales pitch. Now they're punishing students for taking them at their word. 🧵
Critics of colleges are seeing "the unstoppable force of years’ worth of self-righteous rhetoric and pseudo-radical posturing meets the immovable object of students who took them at their word," @Tyler_A_Harper writes: theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
@unionnick Nearly every Columbia student – incoming, present, or past – and professor I talked to felt the university marketed the legacy of 1968 to them as part of the institution's branding. The messaging around 1968 reaches prospective students before they even take their first class. 6/
i am not just waxing poetic. i do not know how we return to the classroom after this. not in an ethical way. if we cannot get police off campuses. if we cannot demilitarize the police. if we cannot defund and abolish, none of this is tenable. i am so disgusted, words fail.
When propaganda no longer works in a bourgeois democracy to keep people in line it will turn directly to fascist violence to keep control. The same violence that is usually reserved for Black people and other oppressed groups will be unleashed on all. Be prepared.
i can’t stop laughing omgggg

This is my 15th year as a college professor. I’m not naive to or surprised by any of its agendas or devices yet, thanks to the “leadership” of my university, this has been the most repulsive and devastating two weeks of my entire career. I won’t recover. Neither will they.
This has to be the darkest day I’ve ever experienced as an academic. Universities ordering physical violence against the students to whom we’ve been entrusted to educate. Again and again. It goes against everything I believe in. I feel disgusted by my vocation.
Your reminder that it was Marsha P Johnson, Miss Major and the queers who beat the NYPDs ass for five straight days to give us many of the LGBTQ rights you enjoy today
There is nothing peaceful about protest. Protest is in response to a wound or coming violation. Protest, at its best, is merely an act of resistance and rejection, to and of violence, already meted out or promised. Protest is self defense
and i asked them to consider why protesting for divestment of university funds from security and militarism and violence and real estate is such a deep threat, even when those protests are “peaceful…”
and we’re never supposed to ask what is the purpose of all those busyness? i told them college and university administrations are not concerned if they learn, only that they have “good memories.”
