New in @ESAEcology: Applying the multivariate Hawkes process (originally developed to study earthquakes!) to #CameraTrap data reveals interspecific interactions among savanna predators & prey doi.org/10.1002/ecy.42… W/ #OpenData on @figshare @lisanicvert @JanBuffel @UPWildlife
To conclude, the multivariate Hawkes process is a promising model, but before interpreting the detected patterns as ecological interactions, more work needs to be done (especially since we do not take covariates such as time of day or habitat into account).
Of course, a simulation is just a starting point, so we also test this model on real data collected with the @SnapshotSafari program: and it detects interactions between species. Some of them are expected (like the lion-impala repulsion), other are more surprising (impala-zebra).
This model is nice and all, but does it have a chance to work on ecological data? Simulations suggest that yes, when enough data is collected (and here, this means a lot of data: above 300 days of sampling on 25 cameras).
Say, for instance, you have 5 species interacting as described with graph (a). If they attract each other with the function described by (b), then the corresponding multivariate Hawkes process models the intensity of occurrence of species at a camera trap (c).
In this article, we use the precise time of detection of species at camera traps to infer attractions/repulsions between species. For that, we use the multivariate Hawkes process, a point process that was first used to model aftershocks following earthquakes.
