the MU Wire staff wrote blog posts about their lives so far during the pandemic and i’m literally obsessed with them 💘 we’re releasing them little by little but the first bunch published today. check them out: marquettewire.org/tag/covid-19/
Don't use a hyphen between adverbs ending in -ly and adjectives they modify: an easily remembered rule, a badly damaged island, a fully informed voter.
Joe Daniels, dean of the College of Business Administration, died after being struck by a vehicle on campus last night, according to an email from University President Michael Lovell. Read more: marquettewire.org/4027026/news/j…
The Marquette Medical Clinic said there are no confirmed or suspected cases of coronavirus at Marquette University or in broader Milwaukee, but some students who have traveled internationally faced incidents of avoidance from others on campus. Read more: bit.ly/37izGrJ
After announcing it would reexamine the demonstration policy in early September 2019, the university is expected to release a final updated version this week, Provost Kimo Ah Yun said at a recent University Academic Senate meeting. Read more: bit.ly/2tS2zgG
In AP style, it's health care, two words with no hyphen, in all uses. #APStyleChat
Capitalize New Year's Eve, New Year's and New Year's Day for the days of Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. Also capitalize Happy New Year in exclamations. But lowercase general references to the coming year: What will the new year bring? #APStyleChat
"Disinterested" means "impartial," which is usually the better word to convey the thought. "Uninterested" means that someone lacks interest.
Don't miss that final comma. When a phrase refers to a month, day and year, set off the year with commas. EXAMPLES: Feb. 14, 2013, was the target date. She testified that it was Friday, Dec. 3, when the crash occurred.
Many people oversimplify our guidance. We do not ban the Oxford comma. We say you don't need it if a simple series is clear without it. But when you need it for clarity, you should use it. #APStyleChat
For plurals of words ending in "is," such as oasis, parenthesis, thesis: Change "is" to "es": oases, parentheses, theses.
Don't get tricked. Here's a little treat: When trick-or-treaters go trick-or-treating on Halloween, they exclaim “trick or treat!” as jack-o'-lanterns glow and glower.
Strunk & White uses Charles’s, Burns’s, etc., as do many others. To be clear: We haven’t changed anything on this point. We may or may not change in the future. We are greatly interested in your thoughts. We embrace the public debate on this and all questions. (3/3)
You asked: Why consider changing? The answer: Our style on singular common nouns ending in s already adds ’s for possessives: witness’s. So we contemplate: For consistency, should the style be the same for proper names ending in s as for singular common nouns ending in s?(2/3)
Last week we said we’re considering changing our style for the possessives of proper names ending in s. We asked: Keep just the apostrophe, as it now is, or change to an additional s plus the apostrophe (Wes’ vs. Wes’s)? Passions are high on both sides of the question. (1/3)
No apostrophe in the plurals of figures and multiple letters: The custom began in the 1920s. The airline has two 727s. Temperatures will be in the low 20s. There were five size 7s. She knows her ABCs. I gave him five IOUs. Four VIPs were there. #APStyleChat (2/2)
With single letters, use an apostrophe to form plurals: Mind your p’s and q’s. He got straight C’s. The three R’s. Dot your i’s and cross your t’s. The Oakland A’s. #APStyleChat (1/2)
Are you enjoying the first day of fall? Lowercase spring, summer, fall, winter and derivatives such as springtime unless part of a formal name: Dartmouth Winter Carnival, Winter Olympics, Summer Olympics.
From our hyphen entry: Use of the hyphen is far from standardized. It is optional in most cases, a matter of taste, judgment and style sense. But the fewer hyphens the better; use them only when not using them causes confusion (loose-knit group, but tax code changes). (1/2)
We are okay with this one.
AP style change: Use accent marks or other diacritical marks with names of people who request them or are widely known to use them, or if quoting directly in a language that uses them: An immigration officer spotted him and asked a question: "Cómo estás?" How are you?
