Former Kent and England spinner Derek Underwood has sadly passed away at the age of 78. He took 297 wickets in 86 Tests for England, and a total of 2,465 first-class wickets in 676 matches. May he rest in peace.
@WisdenCricket He would definitely have taken 400 Test Wickets had he not been seduced by Packer's Dollars in 77 & the Apartheid Rand in 82. God Rest His Soul, Always.
@WisdenCricket @philmcnulty Fantastic player. Even better ambassador for the game when meeting supporters, always understanding his standing to us and gave his time. RIP
@WisdenCricket Played Tests in 3 separate calendar decades from 1966-82. The most prolific England spin bowler and 1 of only 2 to take 250+ Test wickets.
@WisdenCricket Unplayable on rain affected wickets..in words of Boycott the face of a schoolboy, the demeanour of a choir boy and the ruthlessness of a ratcatcher. RIP a magnificent bowler. @_AQuietLife_ @DaveRob13699163 @CullivanPeter @realomerlatif @LahiruGamage84 @kediwins @alawyerwrites
@WisdenCricket Was an outstanding bowler. Very tight control
@WisdenCricket RIP "Deadly" Derek Underwood. A truly top class spinner, unique, maverick, medium pace extreme spin on damp wickets. Unplayable at times. Him and Allan Knott were wonderful together for Kent and England. Part of my childhood. An era has slipped away.
@WisdenCricket @elitecynic His battles with Sunil Gavaskar were a treat to watch. That was Test cricket at its rivetting best. RIP Deadly Derek
