In 1951, Joshua Haldeman, Elon Musk's maternal grandfather who had moved to South Africa a year before, wrote a newspaper article in which he praised Apartheid policies. Haldeman wrote that in South Africa “The natives are very primitive and must not be taken seriously.” About the natives, he said, “Some are quite clever in a routine job, but the best of them cannot assume responsibility and will abuse authority...The present government of South Africa knows how to handle the native question.” About the Africans he employed in his business and home, Elon's grandfather opined, “we have—two native Negro garden boys in the summer and one in the winter and a native girl”. He spoke of how the “law requires that we supply them with separate furnished rooms with nine-inch brick walls, private toilet and shower—in fact better living accommodation that I enjoyed for most of my life in Canada”. However, he continued, despite paying “$10 to $15 a month”, he said it was “impossible to make a native work hard”. “It takes three natives to do the work of one white man,” he added. Haldeman had two wives and was the father of five children, one of whom was Maye Haldeman. Maye is a model and dietician who has appeared in Time magazine, Vogue and Sports Illustrated. In 1970, she married Errol Musk and had three children; Elon, Kimbal and Tosca. Talking to MacG on Podcast and Chill, Haldeman moved to South Africa because he “sympathised with the Afrikaner (white South Africans largely seen as supporting the National Party, who implemented the apartheid regime) government”. Elon has a lot in common with his grandfather and has exhibited signs of continuing the right-wing Haldeman legacy. Take for instance how he named one of his children X Æ A-12 (which he and his partner later changed to X Æ A-Xii). This is very significant. Before moving to South Africa, Elon's grandfather lived in Canada where he was a member of Technocracy Inc., a group which believed democratic governments were wasteful and incompetent. The movement defined its philosophy as “the science of social engineering, the scientific operation of the entire social mechanism to produce and distribute goods and services to the entire population of this continent...For the first time in human history it will be done as a scientific, technical, engineering problem. There will be no place for Politics or Politicians...”. Under a technocratic regime, representative democracy would be gone, as ‘the people’ would no longer need to have a say, instead being ruled only by ‘experts’ using their technical expertise and intellect to manage the economy and society. Technocracy proposed a prosperous future if society handed power to scientists and engineers who would create a technological utopia doing away with democracy and instead using pure science to guide humanity. Some technocrats went extreme by changing their names to numbers, like 1x1809x56, to show their strong commitment to Technocracy. It’s hard to ignore the possibility that Elon’s grandfather’s beliefs may have influenced him, especially since Elon seems to recognise this connection. Joshua was held in high regard by his family. A 2015 biography mentioned how Maye admired her parents, and that Elon seems to believe he may have inherited his risk-taking nature from his grandfather. This suggests that Elon likely grew up hearing positive stories about his grandfather, even though he was a known racist and a supporter of Technocracy. In recent years, Elon’s comments and actions have reflected ideas similar to those of Technocracy Inc., which argued that only skilled engineers and technology experts should shape the future. Howard Scott, the founder of Technocracy Inc., stated, “The engineers and mechanics created this civilisation, and will eventually dominate it.” Who do you think built our current civilisation, and who would be qualified to lead us in a Technocracy today? In summation, Elon Musk’s grandfather, Joshua Haldeman, held deeply controversial views, including support for Apartheid and technocracy, which emphasised rule by technical experts over democratic governance. While it is unclear how directly these beliefs have influenced Elon, there are notable parallels between his admiration for his grandfather and his own technocratic tendencies. Musk’s actions and comments often reflect a belief in the supremacy of engineers and technology experts in shaping the future, echoing the ideals of Technocracy Inc. This connection raises important questions about the legacy of such ideologies and their potential impact on modern technological and societal leadership. Furthermore, Joshua Haldeman openly supported Apartheid policies and held racist views about Black South Africans. Elon Musk’s comments about Black South Africans, like when he said, “They are actually killing white farmers every day” suggest that his upbringing and family narratives may have shaped his perspective on South Africa in many ways.

Molefi Ntseki says Kaizer Chiefs cannot afford to score 5 goals in one game as that would mean complete utilisation of their goal budget for the next 10 games 🚨 "We are not going to steer away from what we are known for, it's one or no goals a game," said the Amakhosi coach.
