Francesca Mani was only 14 when she became a victim of deepfake porn. Francesca was among a group of schoolgirls targeted by schoolmates who made fake nude images made of them using artificial intelligence. Boys at Westfield High School, New Jersey, shared the fake images with each other via Snapchat. "I was in shock," Francesca said. "I started to feel a little sad but I went outside in the hallway and I saw a group of boys mocking a group of girls. They were laughing about it. And then I was just super mad." But Francesca and her mother Dorota soon discovered that what had happened to her and her schoolmates was not illegal. They have since made frequent trips to Washington, DC, over the past three months to lobby for a bipartisan bill, the DEFIANCE Act, that would make sharing sexually explicit deepfakes a crime and allow victims to sue those who create and distribute them. @WomenReadWomen More power to Francesca Mani & her mother. The Defiance Act needs to pass as it’s evidently necessary for the protection of women & girls against this latest form of online ‘tech facilitated abuse.’ And the creators of apps that allow it held accountable.
When I first started reading this, I feared what the ending would be. Kudos to Francesca and her mom for being brave and unashamed. Although she was an innocent victim, she’s not suffering in silence and will hopefully help curb this practice or at least give girls and women a way to fight back.
@WomenReadWomen @JoolzDenby Hit them where it really hurts. 💰💰💰
@WomenReadWomen @Aja02537920 Needs to be made illegal yesterday
@WomenReadWomen A child cannot consent to being in pornography. Children being sexualized is against the law. It’s pedophilia. Arrest the makers of this child pornography. Why do we need special laws to protect children from this type of pornography alone?
@WomenReadWomen @TbordelonLA So, technology is evil & parents aren't raising respectful teenagers.
@WomenReadWomen The mother here is great 👏👏 Teaching her daughter how to stand up for her rights & safety The lines AI deepfake nudes 'aiming to shame public women into silence' 'Girls not knowing rights' 'Girls blaming themselves' 'Leading to suicide in girls' stands out @RishiSunak see above
@WomenReadWomen What kind of young men are we raising!
@WomenReadWomen It's so important for people to understand that men and boys are using this technology to silence girls & women who's opinions they don't like. It is yet another in the latest misogynistic patriarchal toolkit that includes gender identity/trans ideology, to do so.
