What's interesting is as podcasting and "the making of" shows keep growing, I hear more researchers wishing they could show more to their audiences than just the final article They are PROUD of their processes and want people to see why their stories went the way they did

Many media organisations still balk at the idea of having their research uploaded, organised and shared with the reader/viewer. As if they regard their research as untouchable, meritorious simply because it's done by Them, their own special sauce they want to sheild from view

This one was cultural. We at Stone believe the only way to restore trust in news is to follow the science, embrace full transparency and accept that journalists are no longer the gatekeepers of right and wrong, but rather that facts, data, and research are the builders of truth

Concerns such as privacy and proprietory content, we took to our engineers and they crafted elegant and effective workarounds But when we returned to some newsrooms, including international wires heavily invested in factchecking, we encountered an additional barrier

When we tried to approach large media organisations (who had since resorted to embedding entirely subject-independent video content in order to claw back some revenue from their expensive production), they raised a host of concerns - some legit, some not

Whereas the research suggests that audiences trust most when they can see the journalist/researcher at work - like, literally see their face - and they can see the process unfold before them. Stone does all of this, in a matter of seconds.

For fact check, newsrooms assumed (wrongly) that they will regain audience trust via meticulous, long debunks, and that trust and veracity will be restored simply because it's Journalists Telling People Facts so they must be trustworthy

The prevailing wisdom of newsroom management over the last 20 years has been: - We need video content (mainly to raise ad money) - We need fact checkers They pivoted to these (which are both expensive and time consuming) when newsrooms were laying off people left and right

It is free and easy to use, integrates seamlessly into the workflow process, and allows real-time verification of journalistic decisionmaking while automatically creating free, subject relevant video content that can be embedded and monetised. So of course big media hates it
