Coach: Do not use former program’s email, or communication service/device/social media when you have resigned your position. You may mean we’ll, but you’re putting people in a tough spot. Turnover keys, SM accounts, email lists, and move on....be a PRO.

Had this happen a few times. One committee read off an interview script. Another committee was doing the same and 1 interviewer couldn’t even finish the question w/out laughing at her own incompetence of the question.

Coaches: You’d be lucky if more than 1 person in your interview knows anything about sports, and/or coaching. You better be prepared to articulate your mission, vision, etc., to people who don’t understand or value the importance of athletics. Gotta speak the language. #Jobs

Coaches: Keep in mind those hiring often go with the ‘time-served’ model of hiring. That is coach X has been a coach for 10 years. Coach Y for 7 years. Now coach Y is behind the irrational 8-ball of this line of thinking. Time-served doesn’t mean a damn thing. #interview

Coach: You are not your record. Your best coaching job may not be the year you won league/district/state. It’s more likely the year you shifted a culture, had half your team as new starters, replaced a once-in-a-lifetime senior class. Don’t ever judge yourself by Ws or Ls.

Coaches: Asking for feedback after an interview is a fool’s errand. Interviewers are wary of putting foot-in-mouth, and may simply rationalize why you weren’t the pick. And, if they do give feedback, it will be something like “experience,” “fit,” etc. Mind games. #coaching

Things that happen in interviews out of your control: -Committee member mishears you, and doesn't follow-up -You remind someone of someone -Decision made before interview -Went/coached XYZ school -Someone's 'heard about you' even if incorrect. -3rd interv in a row=Member tunedout
