Zeppo Darling @ZeppoD

The #marxbrothers during their ill-fated attempt at chicken farming during World War I in order to avoid the draft. (Gummo ended up going into the army anyway.) From left to right: Chico, #zeppomarx, Harpo, and Groucho.

Which dovetails nicely with this story about #ZeppoMarx from "The Groucho Phile" - both the puncher and the fighter against impossible odds.

But according to Wiktionary, a "scrapper" is "A person who fights doggedly, who exhibits indomitable will. He's a real scrapper, even against impossible odds, he always keeps fighting." en.wiktionary.org/wiki/scrapper

How Groucho described his brothers in Charlotte Chandler's book "Hello, I Must Be Going." I had to look up what Groucho might have meant by "He's a scrapper" - at first, I thought it might mean "someone who gets into a lot of scraps", and #Zeppomarx did like a punch-up.

#Zeppomarx with Barbara Stanwyk and his first wife, Marion. Stanwyk and Zeppo co-owned a horse ranch in the San Fernando Valley during the 1930s. Amazingly, some of the ranch has been preserved as the historic Oakridge Estate. martinturnbull.com/2017/01/14/bar…

Here's #ZeppoMarx in a backstage promo shot with Raquel, probably to promote the romance that never made the screen. Zeppo's part in "Duck Soup" is his smallest since "The Cocoanuts" (in which much of his work was also cut) and afterwords he left the act.

#ZeppoMarx with Groucho and Margaret Dumont in "Duck Soup." Zeppo again plays the role of Groucho's secretary, but has no scenes as memorable as those in "Animal Crackers." (He was supposed to have a romance with glamorous Raquel Torres, but that didn't make the final cut.)

Enjoy this unusual version of #ZeppoMarx and #GrouchoMarx in the Captain Spaulding section of "Animal Crackers." It contains several lyrics and camera angles not seen in the version ordinarily available. youtu.be/WLw3YAFqZWQ

Ultimately, Jaffe enjoyed the "Pinchie Winchie" game so much that he gave Harpo $10,000.

In "Harpo Speaks", Harpo describes how Zeppo helped him get out of a major gambling debt. Chico, of course, was the real gambler of the family, but his brothers also placed some bets here and there. #zeppomarx

@RemcovanDiepen You could be right. That was about the time a newly-divorced Zeppo began dating the future Barbara Sinatra, whom he met when she was a showgirl performing in Las Vegas, according to Barbara's autobiography.

Zeppo near the end of his life. He lived to be 78, ultimately dying of lung cancer. His brothers were gone by then, and he appears to have been estranged from his two adopted sons. He was cared for by the family of Barbara Sinatra, his second wife. #zeppomarx

While Harpo and Groucho saved their money and Chico gambled it away, Zeppo and his first wife Marion lived well. Marion's decoration of their home was widely praised, and she and Zeppo acquired an extensive jewelry collection which was a frequent target of burglars.

Zeppo poses for a movie magazine after a robbery at his home. Offscreen Zeppo wore glasses, just like Groucho. #zeppomarx

Hector Arce, in his biography of Groucho, says Zeppo's baritone here reminds him of Bing Crosby, who was also signed to Paramount at the time.

One of Zeppo's big moments as romantic lead, from "Horsefeathers" (1932). I've heard conflicting stories about whether he was doing his own singing. #zeppomarx

Buying into the the Orsatti agency didn't really work out for Zeppo - Orsatti and his partner were not getting along - and he soon went out on his own as an agent, later bringing in Gummo, who remained an agent for the rest of his career.

Zeppo's resignation letter from the act, as sent to Groucho, 1934. Quoted in Hector Arce's authorized biography of Groucho. Zeppo was never a full partner in the act, as Groucho, Chico, and Harpo were; he was always on salary.

#Zeppomarx and Groucho Marx in "The Cocoanuts". Zeppo's part in the film version was much smaller than his role in the stage version, in part because a big musical number was cut out. Groucho and Zeppo were the last two Marx Brothers to die, in 1977 and 1979 respectively.
