In 1927 Philadelphia Quakers were advised to take “care in speech” using only statements that “convey the exact truth without exaggeration or omission of essential facts.” They were reminded: “false impressions may be conveyed by actions and appearance, no less than by words.”

One of the most enduring concerns of Quakers over time has been a concern for truth. This persists today. Quakers are advised to speak the truth as they see it directly, but also kindly. We need to be aware of the person we are addressing as well as the truth we are speaking.
