@mrjhnsn “What’s a screenshot?”
@LachlanJeffery Comparatively. Bruce Stadium was never a purpose built rectangular venue. It’s an athletics oval that had a best effort re-development to try and make it less compromised for rectangular sports. The view may be “decent” but it is still poor compared to purpose built venues.
@rickydbryan @footyindustryAU @MarkGottlieb @peterfilopoulos And America tried it repeatedly in the 70s and 80s and every time they ended up going back to purpose built venues. West Ham fans in London are the latest to learn this lesson and now they’re stuck with a substandard experience for a generation. It doesn’t “work”.
@seanHPN A Rugby League field is 68m wide. 68 ≠ 110. So your site is at least 40m wider before we even get to length or the expense of moveable stands. Please stop trying to convince rectangular sports that if they just look at it from the right angle this isn’t a problem.
@seanHPN If cost is the issue, why build a longer, wider structure to accommodate oval sports, that already have a purpose built oval venue, instead of optimising it for the rectangular sports that actually need a new venue?
@seanHPN The latest proposal at Civic was for a rectangular venue, right up until today.
@seanHPN Build it Civic. But why does that require a venue compromised to accommodate oval sports when the need is clearly the retirement of the existing venue for rectangular sports and teams that have committed to Canberra as their home for literally decades? It reeks of a poison pill.
@seanHPN Well the obvious compromise is the oval sports stay at the venue they’ve got and the rectangular sports get the new venue they need.
@seanHPN This has been proved repeatedly in America since the 70s, a compromise venue is a compromised venue. Or to put it another way, an oval is not a rectangle and vice versa. No amount of planning or money thrown at the problem changes that.
@seanHPN No, you just end up with a sub-optimal facility for one or the other, or both. This lesson was learnt long before Stadium Australia and Docklands were built.
@the_red_heifer @pvlandys I’d imagine PVL welcomes the free publicity and rivalry this generates. There’s absolutely no incentive to back down at this point.
@LachlanJeffery Covid killed them but unforgivable that “the game” (ie. RFL, ARLC) didn’t see the it as a priority to get back there as quickly as possible after the borders opened up, straight back into SL. But that nascent support was allowed to wither. Years of big money investment wasted.
@mjw241989 @SteveMascord New market, new viewers. Fine. But you don’t do that from scratch if there’s already something to build on. This cycle of start from scratch, relegate them, come back and start from scratch again needs to end.
@Ad_Iudicium_ A bye, by its very nature, distorts the table because some teams have had one or two and some haven’t (ie. some teams have played more games than others at the end of any round of games, except the last). Whether you get points for it or not doesn’t eliminate the distortion.
How hard is it? London is the commercial and financial heart of the UK (and arguably Europe). It’s where the people controlling the money live, meet and entertain. It’s where big money decisions get made and big money gets lavished. The game’s showcase competition must be there.
Giving a deadline on something you want that the other side cannot commit to is a gun to the head approach akin to a ransom. I will make clear here the position of me and therefore @LeighLeopardsRL something I have also previously told PVL. It is not right to just put London in
@ZOOTV76 @Sidneykidney4 @13_A_Side_ Given that period only covers up to 2012 and things have got a lot more expensive since, we’re talking at least £100m today if you’re serious about making London sustainable. And that doesn’t mean pissing that money up against a wall by relegating them after a season or two.
@ZOOTV76 @Sidneykidney4 @13_A_Side_ It cost $80m-$100m (over and above standard funding) over 15 years to establish the Melbourne Storm, not including scheduling regular Origin and Test matches. Unless you’re spending at least that much money, you’ve never really tried to crack London. Go big or go home.
@LeagueFreak Truth be told they might not even get a second team before Ipswich-Logan. Not saying Christchurch won’t happen but I think the twitteratti are way out ahead of where the groundwork for a team there actually stands.
@LeagueFreak New Zealand won’t get a third team before Ipswich-Logan.
