It's early, but a good start for Q3 consumer spending. We'll be watching to see if tariff-based price hikes & a softening labor market weigh on spending in the months ahead.
Friday's retail sales report revealed a surprisingly resilient consumer. 3-month sales growth (orange line) is the highest it's been in a year. However, with goods inflation accelerating, growth is likely less impressive on a real basis.
Tariffs are having an uneven impact on goods inflation. A couple categories are seeing prices rise, while others have been unaffected, so far at least.

Slower growth in aggregate data might not be as meaningful going forward. Probably better to emphasize ratios.
However, the labor market appears to remain in balance as the unemployment rate is unchanged from a year ago. As job creation has slowed, so too has the labor force due to reduced immigration & lower labor force participation.
Payroll growth with a big downside surprise both in July and in May & June (due to large downward revisions). In the last 3 months, job creation in the private sector has slowed, state & local has flatlined, and federal has been negative.
