Aujourd’hui, pas de cartes rouges, pas de canicule. Pour la première fois depuis le 11 juin, nous retrouvons enfin des températures de saison à l’échelle nationale, malgré quelques disparités régionales. Et au cas où vous auriez oublié à quoi ressemble une fin août « normale » en France, je vous ai mis la carte des températures maximales d’hier. Eh oui, c’est ça : autour de 20 °C sur la Manche, 24 à 26 °C dans le Centre, et 30 °C près de la Méditerranée. C’est tout. Et après cet été, ça ferait presque bizarre. Avec la dérive progressive de notre climat, nous avons tendance à oublier ce qu’était autrefois la « normale ». Ce phénomène porte un nom : le « shifting baseline syndrome », ou syndrome de la référence changeante en français. À mesure que le climat évolue, notre perception de la normalité évolue avec lui. Une chaleur qui aurait été exceptionnelle il y a quelques décennies finit par nous sembler banale simplement parce qu’elle devient plus fréquente. Il faut lutter contre cette amnésie climatique. L’humain peut s’habituer et s’adapter dans une certaine mesure. Nos écosystèmes, nos forêts et notre agriculture, eux, ne suivent pas nécessairement au même rythme. Ne banalisons donc pas les étés que nous vivons désormais. Ce n’est pas parce qu’un extrême se répète qu’il devient normal pour le vivant.

Cette photo mérite absolument tous les prix. Elle a même sa place au Louvre. Elle relate précisément l’inertie de l’individu face à l’effondrement. Regardez la composition. Un chef-d’œuvre involontaire. Au premier plan, le sable doré, les tongs abandonnées, la glacière. Le décor ordinaire du bonheur estival. Deux personnages assis, de dos, comme dans un tableau de Caspar David Friedrich. Sauf que Friedrich peignait des hommes contemplant le sublime. Ici, ils contemplent la catastrophe. Et ils ne bougent pas. Au centre, le parasol. Publicitaire, criard, dérisoire. Un pastis face à l’apocalypse. C’est presque trop parfait : la France qui prend l’apéro pendant que le monde brûle. Aucun scénariste n’aurait osé. Et puis le ciel. Les deux tiers de l’image. Cette muraille de fumée qui avale la lumière, ce dégradé d’ocre et de noir digne d’un Turner. La nature qui reprend la palette des maîtres pour peindre notre propre fin. La femme photographie l’incendie avec son téléphone. Mise en abyme totale : nous documentons notre disparition au lieu de l’empêcher. Cette image dit tout. Le déni, le confort, l’habitude. Nous sommes tous sur cette plage. Nous voyons tous le nuage. Et nous restons assis, parce que l’eau est bonne et qu’on a posé nos congés. Les historiens de l’art parleront un jour de cette photo comme on parle du Radeau de la Méduse. Sauf que cette fois, le naufrage, c’est nous qui le regardons depuis la plage. 💔🌍

Before Christmas we covered the Baroness Amos report into maternity and neonatal care. It was pretty horrific reading. Women not being listened to - mums and babies being harmed or even dying when they shouldn't be. And perhaps the most depressing thing of all... absolutely none of it was a surprise. Because multiple reports and multiple reviews over multiple years have told us the same thing. But after we did that reporting, something quite extraordinary happened. We were inundated with emails from women who wanted to share their experiences and their stories. I've been a journalist for 20 years and I've never seen anything like it. Women whose lives were put at risk. Women who lost babies. Women who weren't listened to - who were treated like vessels rather than human beings. So today we brought some of those women together into the studio to talk about what happened to them. We know the problems with maternity care. We've had reports, we've had reviews, we've had hand-wringing and serious faces from politicians and NHS leaders, and promises that things will change. But nothing seems to change. It all seems to stay exactly the same. And it's just not ok. So we're not going to move on and allow the news cycle to shift onto something else. We're going to demand change. And we're going to do it by amplifying the voices of the women who wrote to us with their story to share. And if you've got a story - let us know. We're going to be doing everything we can to get those stories in front of the politicians and the NHS leaders who can do something about it.

Whenever my Samsung washing machine finishes a cycle, I always race to turn it off before the tune ends and I don't know why.
