The funny thing about American socialists is that if you scratch the surface they are really individualist liberals, who have no experience of belonging to a society shaped by a common culture, and ignore how decisive that was for the more successful European social democracies.

Ultimately, the idea that essentially all narratives are ideology (are instrumental to power so that their truth claims are potentially oppressive etc) leads to such a degree of relativism that one cannot oppose any resistance to ideology nor make any positive political proposal.

US evangelical Christianity feels foreign to me for many reasons, but I am still shocked by how urban liberals loathe it, and gratuitously associate it with backwardness and racism. It is probably the most glaring example of gut-driven bigotry I have observed in 35 years here.
