As a character-trait, Vimal Khanna (spiffy Sunny Hinduja), eponymous lead of the Amazon MX Player crime-thriller, tells the security-head of the mansion he’s employed at, that — as a rule, he never drinks > 2 pegs. Because? “Do tak chadti hai. Uske baad main sabki utaarne lagta hoon!” Security guard & Vimal, thus, become drinking buddies. Otherwise, Vimal, hired as a caretaker, spends his wkg. hrs. at the bedside of his rich boss, paralysed from a road accident once. To entertain the old man, Vimal reads aloud from a paperback, Purane Gunah Naye Gunahgar (1963), w/ protagonist Sunil, a journalist cum amateur detective. Why’s this book significant? It marked the beginning of Hindi pulp-fiction writer Surender Mohan Pathak’s career — so extra prolific, it’s hard to figure how many books Surender Ji’s authored since. Each, usually, part of a separate series of books, w/ a given hero — Sunil, Sudhir, Jeet Singh, Pramod, Mukesh Mathur, Vivek Agashe… &, the most popular, Vimal Khanna — on whom the said series, starring Sunny, is based. The show’s story is credited to “Shree Surender Mohan Pathak”, as if the honorific was his 1st name. Its screenwriter, Uddeept Dutt Gaur, tells me, “By now, Surender Ji has written 341 books: 157 belong to Sunil series, 122 to Sudhir, 48 books w/ (anti-hero/outlaw) Vimal Khanna….” Emerging from a generation when novellas, magazines of multiple genres equalled India’s mass entertainment, Surender Ji remains the king of Hindi crime fiction. His fans call themselves SMPians. Call his books what you will — AH Wheeler/railway-station bestsellers (w/ sales in millions), potboilers, penny dreadfuls, dime novels — B-grade lies in the hands of the beholder. Why’s it that I’ve heard of Surender Ji, all my life, but experienced his work, 1st time, only once he’s past 86? That’s got everything to do w/ how, for the longest, the linguistic debate got settled among North India’s middle & upper classes — w/ Hindi as the principal language of the screen, & English to be read for business & pleasure. What about Vimal Khanna then? Column link in bio.
As an SMPian, I really liked this article. It feels like a proper tribute to Pathak ji and his work. Just a small correction to the screenwriter's quote: the Sudhir series has only 23 novels, and the Sunil series has 122.

I am all for diverse and surprising casting choices but THIS….DID NOT WORK AT ALL 🙈 #Kartavya
Will #Ramayan break #Dhurandhar2TheRevenge record on #Boxoffice #Ranbirkapoor #RanveerSingh #Dhurandhar2
detailing and scale which #AdityaDhar showed is at present can be seen only in #SSRajamouli movies in Indian cinema. Dhar does his research and can show every character with a graph. It's the 2 thing which is mostly required for #mahabharat. #Dhurandhar2
#Pushpa or #Dhurandhar , which movie Frenchise you liked most ? #Dhurandhar2 #Pushpa2therule #Dhurandharpart1 #Pushpatherise #Ranveersingh #AlluArjun
#Sankalp by @prakashjha27 is a very much engaging series. With great performances by #nanapatekar & #Zeeshanayub along with very good #SanjayKapoor #NeerajKabi & #KrantiprakashJha and others.
#Sankalptrailer is @prakashjha27 in form . #nanapatekar is intense as always. This time @Mdzeeshanayyub & #SanjayKapoor is with him along with others. youtu.be/sjgRAPaSoZ4?si…
#SubedaarOnPrime is a solid masala movie with intense @AnilKapoor along with #Saurabhshukla & #AdityaRawal along with #FaisalMalik & Fiery #Radhikamadan . #Subedaar is satisfying except last 30 minutes. It's a must watch for #AnilKapoor fans.
@shreemiverma19 Navneet Nishan in Song and Manjeet Kullar in rest of the movie
#BhoyongkarShundor the next #Kakababu adventure coming in 2027. Starring the brilliant @prosenjitbumba in lead. @SVFsocial
YRF universe 3rd movie curse . Dhoom was good, #Dhoom2 was okay but #Dhoom3 was a blockbuster but weakest movie . #EkThaTiger was very good, #TigerZindahai was good but #Tiger3 was a flop. #Mardaani & #Mardaani2 were dark & good. #Mardaani3 is not at all exciting. It's boring
Who will be best as #badesahab in #Dhurandhar2 #Dhurandhar
#DhurandharTrailer is Just MIND-BLOWING. Everyone is too intense. #AkshsyeKhanna is show stealer as always. @RanveerOfficial @duttsanjay & @ActorMadhavan are also very good. @AdityaDharFilms is bringing something unique. #Dhurandhar
#Thamma is a decent film to watch. Could have been better. It lacks comedy. #AyushmannKhurrana & @iamRashmika are good. But cameos of @Varun_dvn & #AbhishekBanerjee are most funny part. @Nawazuddin_S has a very small role. Overall #ThammaThisDiwali is one time watch.
@SrBachchan is the biggest Superstar of Indian cinema. There are lots of superstars and they all are brilliant, but the impact of #AmitabhBachchan is unmatched and no one can match it ever. #HappyBirthdayAmitabhBachchan #HappyBirthdayBigB
