Fade elements in and out on scroll in a window with CSS? ✅ ul { scroll-padding-inline: 200px; } article { animation: highlight; animation-timeline: view(inline); } @keyframes highlight { entry 0%, exit 100% { opacity: 0; } entry 100%, exit 0% { opacity: 1; } } cc @adamwathan
Little scroll-driven animation challenge for anyone who really knows how the hell this stuff works! Watch the video with sound for an explanation of what I'm trying to do: youtube.com/watch?v=ELF0IZ…
1 month on MS Edge after 6 years on Firefox, and I'm really enjoying it. Pros: → Dev tools have small CSS tweaks, makes it feel modern → Dev tools vertical tabs are neat, some new CSS profiling tooling added to edge first → iOS app is great → 1Password integration is better than firefox → The UI feels really nice. Would prefer a "dense" mode for context menus Cons: → Firefox tab containers are way better than workspaces/profiles. Miss this a lot, a major con. → Lots of BS services to turn off: Shopping suggestions, copy+paste jacking, new tab page full of news, AI everything. Even a month later I keep finding new co-pilot and games popups that I have to find out how to turn off Overall very happy, sticking with it. I don't really have an answer for "y not brave/arc/whatever"
Doing it! Switching to MS Edge for a month. Been a Firefox loyalist for many years but I keep having random pages not load and need to restart it. Also the Edge dev tools just feel good compared to chrome.
Don’t know who needs to hear this, but you’re an amazing software engineer. It’s actually the compilers fault your code isn’t working, not yours.✨
Sometimes all you need to solve a coding problem is a break. After a two-day rest, it took me only 5 seconds to fix a bug, a task that might have taken an hour or longer on a Friday afternoon!
🚨 BREAKING: OpenAI just released 128k context GPT-4 Turbo at 1/3rd the price. This means GPT-4 is cheaper, faster, and can now read a prompt as long as an entire book. The announcement comes with additional huge news for developers: - New Assistants API for Code Interpreter and Retrieva - GPT-4 Turbo updated knowledge cutoff to April 2023 - New GPT-4 Turbo Vision API - New Dall-E 3 API - New text-to-speech API (6 preset voices to choose from & insanely realistic voice) - A new Whisper V3 model coming soon - Slashed rate limits (cheaper development costs) Prepare for a whole new wave of AI tools.
[React Native Calendar Schedule DnD] Schedule Drag and Drop feature in react native is almost done !! Super smooth and looks very fun 🤩 I'm developing features first! It'll get mordern minimal design :) Test device: Galaxy A23
⚛️ Quick React tip: 1. Functions that don't use prop or state should be hoisted outside of your components. 2. Functions that are used by an effect should be pulled into the effect. 3. Prop functions used inside useEffect should be wrapped with useCallback.
If you use Node, this blog is for you! We took a look at: ‣ General best practices ‣ Module management ‣ Dependency injections ‣ The drawbacks of singletons for holding state variables hubs.ly/Q027dxNs0
⚛️ React Project Structure Tip: I've tried lots of different patterns in the past 8+ years I've been using React, and each time I've found a new/better iteration. Things I've optimized for: ✅ scalability ✅ maintainability ✅ tidiness (e.g. imports) ✅ clarity
⚛️ useState vs useRef in @reactjs ↓
❌ Avoid using conditionals to render views in React ✅ Instead use Enums ↓
Here is a neat new API that is starting to hit browsers! The CSS Custom Highlight API. Highlight text on the page without having to wrap in a <mark> or <span>
I just read this variable name in a code review: startLoadTabIsActiveAndHasNoErrorsButEndLoadTabHasErrors It's long, but I like it. I prefer descriptive names over code comments.
What makes Git so popular? How does it work? Before Git, developers struggled with source control. Systems like CVS and Subversion caused: - Collaboration Bottlenecks - Pushing to a shared central codebase created bottlenecks and isolated work. - Slow Branching/Merging - Diverging code streams and combining changes was clumsy and inefficient. - Scaling Issues - Performance degraded as projects and users grew. Centralized systems didn't scale. - Release Headaches - Coordinating versions across teams was messy. Git revolutionized source control by: - Enabling decentralized collaboration through distributed repositories. - Streamlining local branching and merges. - Allowing offline work with full local codebase copies. - Optimizing performance even for large projects. - Tracking every change at a granular level. GitHub accelerated Git's popularity by adding: - Web-based collaboration around remote repositories - Pull requests and code reviews - Social coding features like stars and follows However, Git isn't without downsides: - The conceptual model is complex with a steep learning curve. - The command line interface is unintuitive and confusing. Despite these complaints, Git's collaboration features and flexible workflows cement its place in modern development. This game-changing tool revolutionized source control for the better. How Discord Stores Trillions of Messages In 2015, Discord started using MongoDB to store messages. By November 2015, there were already 100 million messages that did not fit in RAM, causing unpredictable latency. In 2017, Discord moved to storing billions of messages in a Cassandra database. By 2022, the number of stored messages had ballooned to trillions across 177 nodes. But Cassandra was plagued by several serious issues. - Hot partitions occurred when a small number of high traffic channels overwhelmed nodes, cascading latency across the cluster. - Garbage collection pauses created latency spikes. - Compactions fell behind, forcing expensive reads to query multiple SSTables. - Maintenance like node repairs interrupted service. Discord migrated to ScyllaDB for the following benefits: - Written in C++ instead of Java, eliminating disruptive garbage collection pauses - Shard-per-core model provides stronger workload isolation to prevent hot partitions from cascading latency across nodes. - Reverse query performance optimized to meet Discord's needs - They reduced nodes to 72 while increasing disk space per node to 9TB. To further protect ScyllaDB, Discord: - Built intermediary data services in Rust that limit concurrent traffic spikes - Data services sit between the API and database, coalescing requests - Query the database just once even if multiple users request the same data - Rust provided fast, safe concurrency ideal for this workload The results? Tail latencies down from 40-125ms to a steady 15ms. Database uptime improved from weekend-long outages to smooth sailing. The system easily handled World Cup traffic spikes, processing events like goals and penalties without breaking a sweat. Discord continues to scale, now reliably storing trillions of messages with ScyllaDB. – Subscribe to our weekly newsletter to get a Free System Design PDF (158 pages): bit.ly/496keA7
