This week's Windows Internals assignment: build a kernel debugging lab and trace process creation. Finally got my kernel debugging lab stable. Tracing the execution path of NtCreateUserProcess was a massive headache, but finally landing at the 0: kd> prompt made it all worth it.
Once connected, I traced the user-to-kernel transition. I disassembled ntdll!NtCreateUserProcess to identify the syscall instruction and the system service number loaded into EAX before the processor switched into kernel mode.
Getting the lab running was honestly half the battle. I fought through VMware network issues, KDNET timeouts, and symbol path errors just to get the target VM talking to WinDbg on the host. Finally got the boot configuration working. (forgot to screenshot)
