Happy 100th birthday to a radio giant Pete Murray, who I had the pleasure of working with at LBC/IRN in the late 80s/early 90s. A pioneer on Luxy, 6.5 Special, the Light Programme, TOTP and R1/2 he was one of the nicest people in the business. And he still has that amazing quiff!

RIP Jay Wynne who has passed away at the age of 56. Began his training at The Met Office in 1999 and joined the BBC Weather team in October of the following year. Jay passed away today after a long illness. Jay Wynne 1968-2025 tvark.org/jay-wynne

RIP James Whale, pioneer of the late night phone-in during those groundbreaking early days of Independent Local Radio on Metro Radio, later Aire/Red Rose. Challenging, lively, confrontational but delivered with friendly authority. A great radio voice you just couldn’t switch off.

Veteran radio sales exec & manager John Rees has died at 88. 60s at Radio Caroline North, 70s at Manx Radio and Radio City, 80s as Sales Manager at Chiltern Radio. Funeral is midday, 28th June at Chester Crematorium. He’s on the left at Chiltern Rd, Dunstable.

This is heartbreaking. John was a pioneer on ILR, just short of 50 years since his warm, friendly, authoritative voice opened Radio Trent on July 3, 1975, having learnt his craft at UBN. His Vintage Chart show on Boom Radio was a great accompaniment to the Sunday roast. RIP John.

51 years ago today on October 8,1973, licensed commercial radio began in the UK with the launch of LBC + its national news service IRN, ending the BBC’s radio monopoly. After 20 years in ILR + 30 at the Beeb I was proud to have a hand in the writing of this for the Golden Jubilee
