Is there a “right way” to power a data center?
Google says its planned 780-megawatt facility in Pine Island, Minnesota, offers a model: backing 1,900 megawatts of wind, solar and battery capacity while keeping ratepayers from footing the bill.
But experts see other options.
Jigar Shah, formerly at the U.S. Department of Energy, argues that operators could build smaller data centers where the grid already has unused capacity. That could lower customers’ bills by spreading the grid’s fixed costs across more users without requiring nearly as much new infrastructure.
But building less could threaten utilities’ profit model, according to David Pomerantz of the Energy and Policy Institute.

If there’s one thing most Americans can agree on, it’s that they don’t want a data center in their backyard.
A Gallup survey conducted in March found that 71% of Americans opposed the construction of a data center in their local area. Chief among their concerns: energy usage.
Now Google is betting that a massive AI data center can help finance a cleaner, more reliable power grid. Its proposed deal with Xcel Energy would add more wind, solar and battery capacity than the data center is expected to use.
