bell hooks was an extraordinary writer, thinker, and scholar who gave us new language with which to make sense of the world around us. Her work was imbued with a deep commitment to truth-telling, but also with a profound sense of care and love for community. She was a treasure.

Mass incarceration/the carceral state were radical experiments to enhance public safety. Much data shows that these experiments fail the task. Abolition and the implementation of new mechanisms to hold individuals accountable and reduce harm are rational responses to this failure

It's not in the news as much anymore, but please don't forget that incarcerated people are still contracting and dying from covid at devastating rates. Covid cases in federal and state prisons have been 5.5 times higher—and death rates 3 times higher—than the general population.
