The placename Glarryford is made up of the Scots word glarry, meaning ‘muddy’ and the English word ford. The site of the ford itself which gave its name to the hamlet marked by Glarryford Bridge which crosses the Clogh River.

Galgorm in Co. Antrim seems to derive from Gall Gorm, meaning “blue rock/castle”. Galgorm was formerly known as Ballystraboy, a name which is clearly derived from Irish Baile (an t)Sratha B(h)uí “townland of the yellow river-holm”.
