I just found out that The East Palace director used a classic sageuk symbolism in the scene where Gucheon and Saeng-gang talk with a wall between them. In historical Korean dramas, this kind of composition is often used to symbolize geumsa (a relationship separated by barriers or social status) or mangsa (a relationship that can never fully come true and exists only in longing). What makes it even more heartbreaking is how the symbolism keeps getting reinforced throughout the scene. Saeng-gang passes an embroidered handkerchief to Gucheon through a gap in the wall, and before leaving, she gently runs her hand across the temple building where he is being confined.
