Summer '89 was a rare moment for blockbuster movies: Batman, Indiana Jones, and Ghostbusters II all released in rapid succession. Summer '23 did it again w/ Barbie, Oppenheimer etc. If Gemini3 drops soon (along w/ GPT5 & Opus4.1), this is basically the same thing for AI models.

OpenAI just released two open source models (one large and one small). Performance of the larger model is pretty close to o3, which is super impressive for an open model. The small model is pretty solid too, and it can run on most laptops.

For complex data-centric tasks, @grok is on another level. Working on code processing PDFs and creating an accurate map of text chunks (exact location within document structure, e.g., contract section, and exact PDF bounding box location). Grok one-shots a solution, unlike o3.

I heard Balaji talk about this on a recent a16z podcast episode and thought it was one of the more high-value insights I've seen/heard about AI recently. Not only does AI take the job of the previous AI, it also creates a new job for managing (prompt/verify) the new AI.

Ok, I'm starting to have a new respect for Grok 4 for hard coding challenges. o3 spends 60s and spits out a helpful but non-detailed roadmap (w/ tiny code snippets). Grok spends 5 minutes, runs the code internally, and spits back the entire revised code (even if 1000+ lines!)
