My latest, on Canadian decline: Once we were among the richest nations on Earth. No longer. Country after country has passed us by, and more are sure to follow theglobeandmail.com/opinion/articl…
Update: as of 2022, Canada’s per capita GDP was 73% of the US’s. With Q4 GDP figures just in, I calculate the 2023 ratio at something like 70%. Headed for two-thirds?
@acoyne Andrew, we tried to warn you... for years. Under no uncertain circumstances should you or anyone else be surprised by Canada's economic, social or status decline under progressive leadership.
@acoyne Trudeau happened. That's what happened.
@acoyne Coyne: "The Canadian economy is now growing slower than the population That is why per capita GDP is now falling. And it’s per capita GDP that really counts, as far as living standards are concerned."
@acoyne I’m much more concerned about the decline in access to justice than the decline in wealth.
@acoyne How much of our divergence with the US was driven by the tech boom in the US and our relative lack of tech success/innovation?
Coyne: "The only way out is faster growth. It doesn’t have to be a lot faster, so long as it is sustained: that way we get the magic of compounding working in our favour. This is why it is right to call this a growth crisis: At the very moment we most need growth to pick up, it has all but petered out."
@acoyne @MarkReid42 We could be so unbelievably rich if we just made meaningful use of our natural resources and actually built stuff here instead of leasing our land for dirt cheap, having foreign companies harvest our resources, and buying those resources back at full price as finished products.
