@adamkdeancto @blinkist I think it reflects unconscious bias.
@RuthlessTweets @blinkist Perhaps. But also historically women have published less books, right? āBy analyzing data from Goodreads, Bookstat, Amazon, and the National Library of Congress, Waldfogel found that womenās share of published titles increased from around 20% in the 1970s to over 50% by 2020.ā
@RuthlessTweets @blinkist Source: qz.com/women-are-now-ā¦ Reasonable therefore to conclude that if picked at random probability is youād pick a book authored by a man, right?
@RuthlessTweets @blinkist To overcome this, youād need to therefore practice conscious bias, selecting specifically for female authors. Depends ultimately on your reading preferences. I have 4 of the 7 books listed, and canāt think of any equivalents to any of them. To refuse these would just be a loss
@RuthlessTweets @blinkist I do however love a book recommendation so if you have any equivalents for the 7 listed, do please share!
@RuthlessTweets @blinkist Sorry, I think you misunderstood me, I mean, could you signpost me to an equivalent book to Superintelligence for example? Or what about Thielās zero to one? I have quite a good selection of books written by women but I have them for the books because of the subject matter.
@RuthlessTweets @blinkist For example, I havenāt read Angela Duckworthās book but Iāve seen her Ted talk. Iāll probably now buy that book as itās a fascinating subject. If it had been written by a manā¦itād make no difference. Letās judge books by their contents, not their authorās physical attributes.
@adamkdeancto @blinkist I donāt know the contents of the books he recommended. I havenāt read them, and probably never will. The Invisible Woman, by Caroline Criado Perez would make an excellent start for you.
@adamkdeancto @blinkist Correction, Iāve read Brave New World. I assume youāve read The Handmaids Tale? And the Thinking Fast / Slow one.
@RuthlessTweets @blinkist I miscounted. I've read Man's Search For Meaning, Thinking F&S, Zero to One, Brave New World, Superintelligence. I've got The Beginning of Infinity on my list. I haven't read The Handmaid's Tale āĀ while I respect @MargaretAtwood as a writer, the whole premise doesn't interest me.
@RuthlessTweets @blinkist @MargaretAtwood That being said, it's a shame you're discounting those books based on...the authors? Viktor Frankl survived several concentration camps (his wife did not) and wrote about it. To discount his account of suffering because he's a man seems warped imo.
@adamkdeancto @blinkist @MargaretAtwood Thatās the problem, then.
