VideoLAN services are back after numerous upgrades, after all the PHP, Gitlab, Kernel and other huge security issues of the week. Today is sysadmin appreciation day :) (Reminder: people maintaining our infra are volunteers, like all of us)

Believe it or not, there were 12 x86 processor manufacturers: 1/ Intel: The creator of the x86 architecture.  2/ AMD (Advanced Micro Devices): Initially a second-source supplier licensed by Intel, later designing independent x86 chips (e.g., Am386, Am486, K5, K6).  3/ Cyrix: A major third-party vendor in the 1990s, famous for low-cost alternative CPUs like the 486DLC, 5x86, and 6x86. 4/ IBM: Produced second-sourced Intel chips and manufactured custom Cyrix variants under its own brand. 5/ NEC: Early pioneer that designed x86-compatible CPUs (such as the NEC V20/V30 series), which improved performance over original Intel 8088/8086 chips. 6/ Texas Instruments (TI): Manufactured and sold Cyrix designs while developing some of its own micro-architecture tweaks.  7/ SGS-Thomson (STMicroelectronics): Manufactured and marketed Cyrix-designed x86 microprocessors.  8/ NexGen: Designed innovative x86 chips (like the Nx586) that translated x86 instructions into RISC-like micro-ops before being acquired by AMD.  9/ IDT (Centaur Technology): Entered in the late 1990s with the cheap, low-power WinChip line. 10/ Rise Technology: Produced the mP6 processor aimed at budget laptops.  11/ UMC (United Microelectronics Corp): Produced 386 and 486 clones in the early 1990s before patent litigation from Intel forced them out. 12/ Transmeta: Emerging slightly later in the late 1990s with Code Morphing software to translate x86 instructions dynamically.

45 years ago this month, IBM introduced its first PC powered by Intel's 8088 processor. That design win helped establish x86 as the foundation for modern computing. From the PC era to the AI era, x86 remains at the center of where work gets done.

Watchdogs say the previous CEO model suspiciously started slowing down immediately after the announcement

Commentators repeatedly described yesterday’s Artemis splashdown as “textbook.” The flight dynamics were flawless. This shows that getting Outlook to work is literally harder than rocket science.

Notice that Apple didn't comment on the iPhone pictures from Artemis II until the crew safely landed

Lloyd's of London had a $200 million problem floating 210 miles above Earth. So they called NASA and said: go get our satellites back. NASA charged them $5.5 million. For that price, they got two astronauts in nitrogen jetpacks, flying untethered at 17,500 mph, manually stopping spinning satellites by jamming a spike into their rocket nozzles, then having a third astronaut swing them into the shuttle cargo bay with a robotic arm. The first retrieval went wrong. The grapple fixture didn't work. Joe Allen had to hold a 9,600-pound satellite over his head by its antenna for an entire 90-minute orbit while Gardner bolted an adapter to the bottom. His wife radioed from Houston: "Make sure there are no pigeons on your shoulders." They did the second satellite two days later. Ran an hour ahead of schedule. When Discovery landed at Kennedy Space Center, a Customs official (arranged by NASA pranksters) confronted the crew about duties owed on $200 million in imported satellite equipment. Lloyd's awarded them silver medals, flew them to London on the Concorde, and arranged tea with Prince Charles. Gardner held up a "For Sale" sign next to the satellites. The jetpack he used was permanently retired. No human has flown untethered in space since. $5.5 million for a $200 million repo. The best ROI in insurance history came from two guys in jetpacks.

NASA pays $100M for Microsoft 365 licensing across the agency. They standardized every system on Microsoft. They put Microsoft Surfaces on the Orion spacecraft as the crew's personal computing devices. And the first technical crisis of humanity's return to the Moon was Reid Wiseman radioing Houston to say he has two Microsoft Outlooks and neither one works. Mission Control's response? "With your go, we can remote in and take a look." The same exact workflow your company's IT helpdesk uses when you submit a ticket on a Monday morning. Except the user is traveling at 4,275 mph, 30,000 miles from Earth, and the Wi-Fi situation is considerably worse. This spacecraft survived hydrogen leaks, helium leaks, a faulty heat shield, and a broken toilet. Outlook broke anyway. The toilet actually got fixed faster. The real story here is that Microsoft has achieved something no other software company in history can claim: a support ticket from lunar transit. Their enterprise sales team should frame this. "Battle-tested in space" is a positioning statement most B2B companies would mass murder for, and Microsoft accidentally earned it because Outlook crashes everywhere, including orbit. Outlook remains the only software in human history that performs identically whether you're in a cubicle in Redmond or aboard a spacecraft bound for the Moon. Universally, reliably broken. And we keep buying it anyway.

@denkmit Worst Idea Ever So sad

Can you top this soldering mistake? In 1980 in Russia, at some subcontractor facility, someone used leaded solder instead of lead-free solder in a fuel filter that was later fitted to a Vostok 2M rocket at the Plesetsk launch pad. No problem, it's soldered correctly, so they thought. Only problem is that the Vostok 2M used high test peroxide (HTP) to power the turbopumps, and lead is catalytically active and decomposes hydrogen peroxide on contact. This leads to rapid exothermic decomposition, fire, and ultimately a big 400T of TNT KA-BOOM. 48 people in the ground crew died due to someone at a subcontractor using the wrong type of solder. That was a very bad day. They didn't figure out the issue until a year later. Think twice when you next select your solder type.

The math on this image is insane. New Horizons transmitted at 2,000 bits per second from 3 billion miles away. Slower than a 1990s dial-up modem. It took 16 months to download all the flyby data. The spacecraft had to hit a target box 100km wide, arriving within 150 seconds of schedule, after 9 years of flight. Miss it and the preloaded observation commands point at empty space. Ten days before arrival, the spacecraft crashed and went into safe mode. Engineers had 72 hours to restore everything. The probe is now 5 billion miles out, still whispering data back to Earth. We got 50 gigabits of Pluto photos using technology slower than your phone’s bluetooth.
