Programming with AI is like having a gentle and kind pair programmer with you at all times, who will help you unfailingly with their encyclopaedic knowledge of everything.
Albeit, they're a compulsive liar with chronic laziness and the reasoning powers of a demented goldfish.
In other words, AI is not creating a new frontier where new languages will proliferate and anyone can write in Haskell (etc.) -- it's a punctuated equilibrium event that will lead to the extinction of almost all programming languages and effectively halt PLT forever.
This is the theory, which I've heard many times before.
So far, the reality seems to be that AI accelerates network benefits.
If true, we won't see new programming languages anymore, because one will achieve escape velocity and become the one language to rule them all.

We all write garbage code (hopefully only occasionally!) and if the idea of your code being 'garbage' depresses you, then programming is probably not the career for you.
Greatness demands high expectations, regardless of your or my personal insecurities or sensibilities.

Jon’s life was destroyed by mob justice. If anything good comes out of it, maybe accounts such as this will prompt somebody in the future to think twice before signing "open letters" or cancelling people.
For me it’s also a broader reflection: inaction is also action. Today it’s…

I was cancelled in 2021 for something I didn't do. The impact this had on my life was devastating, but I've never had the courage to talk about it before.
This is my story of the misery that cancellation brought to my career, my social life and my health.

OpenAI needs to start sponsoring @zioscala bounties, because I can't fathom how many tokens vibe coders have burned up trying in vain to solve a programming challenge they will never be able to solve, in a language they will never learn, for a bounty they will never get.
Take a look a newly released Metals v1.6.1!
It includes:
- New MCP tools and fixes
- SQL highlighting
- Updates to fuzzy matcher logic
- New X-ray inlay hints
