People disappointed that teachers chose not to fight for a better future for the children of Alberta. Um, no. That is NOT what happened. This vote was about teachers' contract with the government of Alberta. It included things like health care benefits and salary. 6/
This is business. Business between teachers and their employers. It is not about students. It is not about children. Teachers do care about their students. Teachers do want better learning conditions. 7/
Teachers do want the government of Alberta to wake up and realize that Alberta does not have a future without these children. But, it is not on teachers to fix this. It is not on teachers to give up their health benefits and their salary so that children are taken care of. 8/
That is the government’s job. The government can give more money to education. The government can decide that students matter and that they need proper supports in place to be successful. 9/
If you are pissed off that children aren’t getting a proper education, that they aren’t being considered, that the government is not PROPERLY funding education—I can tell you how to fight. How to fix that. How to make a change. Call your MLA. Visit with your neighbors. 10/
Create a flyer and hand it out at the supermarket. Start a petition. Run for office. Please do not blame teachers. I want what is best for my students but I also want what is best for me and my family. I want health benefits and a reasonable salary. 11/
I want to be able to negotiate a contract with my employer without having to consider the livelihood of my students. A teacher contract is not the place for that. Stop expecting teachers to fix this problem with education. It’s about proper funding. 12/
Only elected officials can do anything about education funding. Is education important to you? Do you think public education should be PROPERLY funded? Then put your feet to the ground. Raise your voice. Spread awareness and information. 13/
Stop coming at teachers. Class sizes, class composition, support, funding, special needs students—these are all very important issues. But they have no business on the central bargaining table for a teacher’s contract. So stop trying to shove them there. 14/
Education in Alberta is an issue. Overcrowded classes. Not enough resources. Not enough support. Not enough money. These are not just issues for teachers, and they are not issues teachers can fix. They are issues for all Albertans. And only the government can fix them. 15/
@MinorDell Only government and a loud electorate telling them that the current model is NOT okay will change the status quo. It is up to EVERY Albertan to stand up to this government and say / demand that the government needs to FULLY fund PUBLIC education. #weareATA #IStandWithABTeachers
