I wrote about the glue holding the pandemic olympics together, the source of some absurd percentage of my sustenance here: Tokyo convenience stores nytimes.com/2021/08/01/spo…
I wish this were not the case, but I got back to the hotel late after covering soccer, and I’m eating more 7-Eleven for dinner. Am I going to be OK when all this is over
@andrewkeh Thank you for this mouthwatering food delight. Those convenience store are remarkable. I love Japan and its amazing creative ways of serving food. I only hope it’s not too many years before I can get back there.
@andrewkeh Anthony Bourdain once called the egg salad sandwich at Lawson’s one of the best things he had eaten in his entire life.
@andrewkeh Even before the pandemic, Tokyo's convenience stores play an important role. There's a great socio-cultural analysis of them in Tokyo Totem (an English language version of the book is available) tokyototem.jp
@andrewkeh My favorite go to at the 7-Eleven’s were the rice balls and egg salad sandwiches.
@andrewkeh The egg sandwiches are not to be missed (as are almost all the sandwiches, and ice creams). Also, if you buy the cheapest bottle of Japanese whisky they have, and a big bottle of TanSan (very carbonated soda water), you can make highballs exactly to your liking
@andrewkeh @nytimes They are a testament to how garbage American gas stations are in comparison
@andrewkeh Really enjoyed this article! Ate breakfast every morning (pre-pandemic) from the 7-11 near my Shinjuku hotel, loved the hot canned coffee/tea options. Conbini food was always great!
