As a logophile, I’ve always enjoyed this time in December when dictionaries release their Word of the Year. These word selections can tell us something important about our world, something we need to pay attention to. (1) Merriam-Webster Dictionary word of the year: Polarization. “Division into two sharply distinct opposites.” (2) Oxford University Press: Brain rot. “The supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging.” (3) Cambridge Dictionary: Manifest. “To use methods such as visualization (picturing something in your mind) and affirmation (repeating positive phrases) to help you imagine achieving something you want, in the believe that doing so will make it more likely to happen." Google’s Year in Search 2024 is also important for us to pay attention to, as it tells us what the world was wondering about this past year.
