@WinnieKiiza Continue to shine. May the Almighty continue blessing you in all your endeavors. Keeping the Hope Alive and fly the Ugandan flag higher and higher.

I am deeply honoured to be named among the 2026 inductees into the Politicians’ Hall of Fame, alongside five political leaders from four continents. I receive this recognition with humility and gratitude. For me, politics has always been about people, public service and the courage to remain committed to what is right, even when the circumstances are difficult. Thank you to the Athens Democracy Forum and the Better Politics Foundation for this recognition. I share it with everyone who continues to believe that politics can be a force for public good. Better politics begins with the people who choose to practice it.

The phone rang at 5:30am today. It was my second ex-wife, Tjaša the Slovenian. Tjaša: Hello, Rukirabachwezi. How are you doing today? Me: I am fine. How are you? And congratulations on your marriage. Tjaša: What marriage, you fool? I am single again. It lasted only a few weeks and we broke up. Me: Ah! You change men more frequently than you change toothbrushes. At this rate, men need a rotational schedule. Tjaša: Are you trying to insult me or what? Isn’t it you who left me after one small disagreement? You flew away from me like a ghost. Me: No, I did not leave you. If I had left you, I would not be talking to you. I only left your Caucasian pride and arrogance because they had become systematic and dangerous. I was never going to censor myself merely to accommodate your bushwa behaviour. Tjaša: I am very sorry that my mannerless manners pushed you away, my Rukirabachwezi. And I can see that you are very happy now. My bad. Me: Extremely. So why have you called? To submit your latest marital postmortem or to disturb my happiness? Tjaša: By the way, I am very sorry that I took you for granted. Whenever I encountered problems, you would sit down with me, listen and help me find solutions. But whenever you had problems, I looked at you as though you were the problem too. Instead of standing with you, I blamed you for having difficulties in the first place. I realised my mistake too late. Actually, last night. Me: Exactly, your problems arrived in our relationship as joint property. Mine arrived as criminal charges against me. Whenever your world caught fire, I was automatically recruited into the fire brigade. Whenever mine caught fire, you stood across the road investigating why I had been careless enough to own a combustible building. Tjaša: I was foolish and young. Forgive me. Me: I used to tell you that you were selfish, but you never listened. Every complaint became an accusation, every disagreement became an attack, and eventually I became exhausted from explaining elementary reciprocity to an adult. Tjaša: I understand that now. I can even become your mistress if you are no longer interested in polygamy. Me: What an extraordinary demotion. From wife to mistress by voluntary application. No, thank you. You already showed me your true character. Your problems were ours to solve, but my problems were somehow evidence of defective manufacturing. You blamed me for them until, in your eyes, the difficulties I was experiencing became my identity. I learnt something important from you: love cannot survive indefinitely where compassion travels in only one direction. Tjaša: You have become philosophical. Me: That is what happens when tuition fees are paid in emotional suffering. One must at least graduate with something. If you marry badly, you end up becoming a philosopher like Socrates. Tjaša: Anyway, Rukirabachwezi, you will always be mine. You are irreplaceable. Me: Okay. It was nice talking to you. Tjaša: Wait, Rukirabachwezi. When are you returning to Slovenia? Me: To do what? Is there a client for me? Tjaša: Yes. ENDS

African history did not begin with slavery, colonialism or European arrival. Long before those periods, the continent was home to powerful kingdoms, centers of scholarship, international trading networks, complex political systems and societies that produced their own knowledge, art, architecture and technology. Yet for generations, much of this history was interpreted for the wider world through colonial institutions and European writers who often viewed Africa through the racial assumptions of their own time. During the colonial era, portraying Africans as people without meaningful history served a political purpose. If African societies could be presented as primitive, disorganized or incapable of governing themselves, European conquest could be portrayed as civilization rather than domination. Some colonial scholars dismissed oral traditions as unreliable, minimized African achievements or attributed impressive monuments and civilizations to outsiders rather than accepting that Africans had created them. One famous example is Great Zimbabwe, the enormous stone city built between roughly the 11th and 15th centuries. Early European colonists resisted the conclusion that its African inhabitants and their ancestors had constructed it, proposing foreign builders instead. Archaeological evidence eventually established what local history had always indicated: Great Zimbabwe was the creation of an indigenous African civilization and the center of a powerful regional state. This is why recovering African history has involved more than simply adding forgotten names to textbooks. African historians, archaeologists and scholars have worked to examine oral traditions, African languages, archaeology, manuscripts and local sources alongside written records. Their work has helped restore a far more complex picture of Africa before and during European domination.
