A model cannot always be absolutely accurate and it is important that we realise this...
An atomic model represents what the structure of an atom could look like, based on what we know.
A model is a representation of a system in the real world. Models help us to understand systems and their properties.
The idea of atoms was invented by two Greek philosophers, Democritus and Leucippus in the fifth century BC.
It is important to realise that a lot of what we know about the structure of atoms has been developed over a long period of time
Quarks are one type of matter particle. Most of the matter we see around us is made from protons and neutrons.
We have now discovered about two hundred particles.
Physicists constantly look for new particles. When they find them, they categorize them and try to find patterns.
These experiments helped scientists determine that atoms have a tiny but dense, positive nucleus and a cloud of negative electrons
